Right to repair.

Great that Apple are allowing access to parts and tools for some of its newest products after pressure from US governmnt.

https://news.sky.com/story/apple-allows-self-repairs-to-some-iphones-and-macs-after-pressure-from-biden-administration-and-regulators-12471232

"Apple said it will launch an online store for self-service repairs early next year, which will have more than 200 individual parts and tools for making the most common repairs on the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13."

I should think so as well. Disgusting that manufacturers try to prevent us from repairing products WE OWN.

I can't wait to see what they're going to charge for the parts.....Doug

Ha, good point! Probably  cost a bomb.

Its a good start though, this stuff needs to be enshrined in law, I mean its just a way to rip customers off by preventing them from doing what they like with their own property.

I agree, good start. Many of the States here are proposing that unless there an owner-right to repair the product can't be sold. Apple had no choice but to go the way they did. I'm sure many others will follow. Lots of people could fix lots of things and save lots of money...once they can buy the parts.....Doug

Nice video from Adam Savage on this. Also expressing his love for ifixit kits.

He also talks about his love for Leatherman multitools that I'm also a fan of. And like Adam I too wasn't aware that Leatherman use screws that look like Torqus screws but aren't and you can't get the bits.

This needs to be extended to many many other things too, I feel bad for the farmers with the Massey Ferguson Harvesters that aren't allowed to repair those eithers, they have to truck them into a service center to reset a button, things they can easily do as well.

McDonald's Ice Cream Machines are the other racketeering scam, that is why they are constantly down, need the manufacturer to come out and reset them for extortionate rates.

Yep, its just another way for manufactures to extract money from the customer.

Built in obsolescence is another poly that's been around for many years. It stared with light bulbs. Manufacturers realised that light bulbs were lasting  long time, so they built in a limited lifespan so they failed earlier so they could sell more light bulbs. That ploy has been used on numerous products since. Printers are the infamous example in that there's actually a chip inside that counts the number of prints made and then deactivates the printer when that number is reached. At one time (not sure if there still is) there was software on the internet to attempt to reset the counter. It cant go on much longer of course, because we are dumping all our waste and burning more fossil fuels to unnecessarily manufacture more stuff.

Car manufacturers too...  The concept of "non serviceable parts"   Porsche does it with transmissions.  They are "non-Serviceable" and have to be returned to Porsche for a new one.  In most cases a new PDK is in the 10-20K range, mine was $13,000 but the physical transmission was fine, the gears were fine, it was the $500 in electrical that heat soaked and went bad.  So because we can't replace those electronics ourselves what should be a $1000 fix with labor is a $13,000 replacement... Oh and if you don't send your old transmission back to Porsche they charge you a core charge and the price goes up to $20,000...

So yeah, I am all for right to repair!!   Same with TV's.  How many big screen TV's went bad over a $10 part that cost hundreds to repair.  Remember when TV's outlived us, now a few years out of one is a good life LOL.

Ditto for refrigerators.  Refrigerators used to last 20 years, sometimes longer.  If it stopped cooling, a repairman would come out, find the problem and fix it.  Now, if it stops cooling and is beyond its 5-year warranty, just spend another $1000 for a new one because the repair can easily be $800+.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Yep, just had that with a 3 year old $400 dishwasher that they wanted $500 to repair because the warranty was only 12 months...  Bought a new one instead.

On a smaller scale, microwave ovens! First one I had many years ago was made by Sharp. Great oven, lasted years. New ones on the other hand are garbage. Ive had two go rusty inside just after the warranty is up.

Over here I had a friend about to purchase an RV (Recreational Vehicle over here, Caravan over there) and he was advised by the sales person who is a friend to go and buy something used instead.  Apparently the quality or lack there-of coming out of the factories is SO bad dealers do not even want to sell them.  The rumor is they can not get quality help.

It's true they don't like them like they used to, while technology has advanced exponentially reliability and longevity have not.   Wasn't there a thread a while back that this all started with the lightbulb?

@martin-w I do hope you saw my other thread in hangar chat as well.  I did not want to name names but it was directed at certain individuals...  Wishing you a nice weekend.

There's a trick that I do to prevent that!  I have a cheapo SEARS microwave that I bought maybe 16 years ago that sits in an under cabinet cubby hole that was designed to hold it.  When I nuke my oatmeal for breakfast (4 minutes) There is not much area for the steam to vent.  I will then wipe out the inside and let the door stay open while embellishing my cereal before closing the door.  No sign of rust or mildew yet.

With my new dishwasher, I'll wipe off the door after removing the clean dishes and let the door stay open for about 2 hours to make sure it's dry on the inside.  Same with my 32 year old Maytag clothes washer, the top cover stays open when not in use!  Also the hot/cold intake faucets are always turned off!

👍😼

Real men often have firey debates but still love each other after. And hopefully we all learn something from those interactions and like a good game of chess it generates new neurological connections and keeps us sharp.

Have two more cat points. 😼😼

😂 Aviation repairs and parts, both commercial and general, with all kinds of regulation and certification, are very overpriced in many's opinion then
