Lower fps and framerate reduction over time

Featured Replies

Set both Terrain and Objects LOD to 200,but the issue remains.

I did try ISLC (memory cleaner and a few times it cleaned the memory ).

After 1.5h the framerate started to drop every few minutes.
After 2h and 10 min I stopped the flight with fps around 24.6.

If I make flights up to 1.5h then it is almost not noticeable. Making 2h+ flights shows the issue.

See here a screenshot after 2h and 10 min :

https://www.dropbox.com/s/kconxvxs52kh37h/Foto 27-11-2021 11 06 09.jpg?dl=0

Main thread load : 83-96% (at startup around 58%)
GPU load : 38-50% ( remained the same during the flight )

Especially the GPU showing Red with low load is weird ( 3090…).

I had planned to upgrade my 7940x server to a 12900K this summer. Maybe I will do it sooner. The performance will be higher so more headroom till the framerate drops below 30….

if you have put settings where your fps would not drop below 30 within 3h then you  can fly very well.

Have you determined when performance starts dropping after starting a flight?  Is it a uniform fall off over time, or does it not appear until you are say 2h into a flight?  I'm at about 1h after TO now and MainThread is at 16ms, Manipulators ~6.5ms.  I'll look again as I get near my destination which is a 2h flight in total.

Hi Noel,

Last week I bought Bodrum/Turkey so I am trying to do a flight from Amsterdam to Bodrum.

Just after Alps ( after 1h 25 min ) the franerate drop starts. Slowly but gradually. And then it continues.

To be sure I unchecked all Addons incl the 4 seasons.

If you are willing to , could you try that same flight. Just to see if you experience the same drop.

Thanks,  Gerard

I will a little later.  I'm about 2/3 of the way from Barajas/Madrid to Heathrow.  Main and Manipulators dropped from initial values (while over ocean ;o)) and now that I'm over land again Main has gone to up to 18ms and Manipulators to 8.2ms or so.  About 200m out from Heathrow now with lots of clouds below.

Past the channel and now 40m out from EGGL.  Main at 21, Manipulators 8.5ms.

Just a couple miles out from Heathrow the main is up to around 26ms, and manipulators around 11ms.  At touchdown however that got considerably worse and I wasn't able to maintain 30fps as the sim became main thread limited.  Apparently Heathrow at night is hard to process!  Terrain LOD 220, Object LOD 200.

spacer.png

A 12900K would solve that for me as for single-thread performance this CPU is a good 35%+ faster at the same clock speed at my 9900K.  But alas, it rarely comes into play so we will cope with this by adjusting sliders as needed.  The visual differences are modest at best by turning down Terrain LOD to less than 220.  What I wish is that Asobo would use more dynamic optimization when on the ground where Terrain LOD is not very relevant most of the time.

I'm about to go to 64GB RAM.  I have a theory that it will help.  I get that software optimizes for the amount of ram you have etc.  But I also know if more RAM is available the computer will use it.  I have more or less used the same settings since day 1.  At 16 GB ram I had constant issues with crashing and performance degrading overtime.  At 32 I still have issues so I'm going nuclear 64GB 4X 16. $450 worth of DDR 4 3200MHz.  At work I have about 12 applications open at once and I complain about several programs that had lock up issues.  I asked the IT/Computer guy for 64 GB of RAM. He said oh it won't help no modern computer needs more than 16 for what you are doing. So I told my boss "I'm going to put 64GB of RAM in my computer at my expense."  He said okay just don't tell The computer guy.  After I got 64GB of RAM Solidworks never locked up on me again. Giant blueprints I can drag around zoom in and out no problem, 3d models load much faster and when I make a change I don't have to wait 30 seconds for the computer to do anything.

Right now I'm just trying to figure out the checkerboard issue across the top of the screen and the maddening objects ghosting... I thought it was TAA, but it does it no matter what.

I had 64 GB of RAM and only had 15-16 GB used totally, exactly as it was when I had 32. And this was before SU5, now even less 🙂

64 GB are useless. MSFS is tailored for XBox and uses 5-6 GB of RAM.

Mornin Folks, I want to share a simple thought. We know that the MS servers momentarily are painful and stressed. So I need to try flying with photogrametry off and watch if performance is unbroken. But since the new SU7 performance looks gradually degraded.

The most RAM use I have seen is around. 18 Gb out of 32Gb when using MSFS.

So I also do not think that 64 Gb will be better than 32 Gb. I even think that the overal max framerate will be slightly lower. Benchmark tests show that the more memory is not used the slower the pc gets…

- - -
Yesterday I wrote that I was thinking about upgrading my server from the 14 core 7940X @ 4.7 Ghz to a 10 core 12900K @ 5.2/5.3 Ghz.

I ran  into the issue that here in the Netherlands you cannot buy DDR5 ram. And DDR4 ram seems to be making the pc about 5% slower in performance….

It might even take up to 35 weeks from now till it becomes available…

What do you guys think ? Buying a Z690 motherboard with DDR4 support or wait and make flights up to max 2h ?

Michael, could you do the non photogrammetry test and report back ?

Yes, I'm sure the performance loss has to do with the rudimentary slown down bandwidth. I will do my test flight over my very same testscenario from Lepa to lows and report back. Regards

How the bandwidth relates to the main thread and manipulators slowing down over time I do not know. And why the GPU’s ms are going up with a low GPU core load and low VRAM use.

But your TestFlight will show if photogrammetry Off solves the issue.

You might see if you can cope with lower LOD.  I say this because as mentioned dialing back Terrain LOD has allowed me to do 2-3h flights and land smoothly at 30 fps.  It's rare that I ever have issues now coming into complex airports in busy metro areas since doing this.

When I first got onto this I was flying into KSFO and all was well until just before touchdown when frames dropped all the way down to 25 or so.  After getting off the runway I stopped and reduced Terrain LOD until frames went up to 30 again and stayed there during taxi to the gate.  Went from T-LOD of 300 to 220.  The seductive part is that all the way from KDEN gate until touchdown at KSFO had no problems whatsoever with T-LOD of 300.
