Lower fps and framerate reduction over time

Featured Replies

i have used the mod for google maps replacement, and all was fine during one week. today, i had a lot of stutters. i uninstalled it and reactivated the cache memory again (150 gb): then butter.

the mod is wonderfull but something is not working good since last version.

It's even worse on my side, i have this issue at the beginning of the flight and i have to restart the sim to figure it out. It happens occasionally but happens definitely with the DC-6, none of the cores or threads is maxed out during this issue, both CPU and GPU uasge are very low.

Maybe this link here will be helpful https://forum.pmdg.com/forum/main-forum/pmdg-dc-6-cloudmaster-forum/153213-has-the-rendering-pipeline-been-re-enabled?p=153230#post153230

Which is your terrain level of detail? I had the same fps drop during cruise ( after 1 hour of flight ) and only when i reduced tod from 200 to 100 i  brought back my usual  fps/performance.

I had it set to 300. That was what I used since almost 2 months.

Good idea. I will put it back to 200 like before and see what happens.

Will make a flight right away.

Thanks 👍

I have had the same from time to time on various aircraft, and it actually happened to me about an hour ago. I raised a ticket a while back on the Salty mod GitHub page and someone gave some advice that hasn’t failed me yet…

When the FPS starts to fall, hit Esc to go to the options, then in General Options choose, Data. Turn the top setting (online data) to OFF. This should disable all the other options immediately beneath it.

apply the settings and return to the flight. Then go back to the menu and re-enable the online options from the same menu.

Your FPS should be (mostly) immediately restored.

Thanks for the tip. I will try it for sure when the framerate is dropping.

Currently halfway in a 3h flight. At startup the main thread was 23 ms. Now it is 29 ms.
This time with Terrain LOD set back to 200 instead of 300…

But in my case low cpu usage, low RAM usage, low VRAM usage. But the fps drops. If there was a memory leak I would see that….

Ignore the people that are saying it's a memory leak.  If it's a memory leak, you would see your memory usage by MSFS constantly go up and up and up in Task Manager. If your memory use is confined to a certain range and you don't see a constant increase of memory by MSFS that doesn't seem to stop increasing, it's not a memory leak.

My system is pull/pushed liquid cooled. Therefore the low core temps.

But why does one core run 300 MHz lower than the others? That's the main thread which bottlenecks the CPU performance, by the way.

It's not a memory leak but it's more like a coding loop. I've seen the behavior since SU3. The Mainthread is the scheduling threads. The issue is not there. The issue is in the manipulator threads. Whenever the FPS goes down the drain, you will see the manipulator threads response time to go from 1ms to 53ms.  It almost like it get stuck trying to do something and it can get out of it.  If you restart your flight everything goes back to normal.  This is has to be deep into the Asobo code.

I just stopped the flight after 2h as the main thread was up to 41.3 ms. The manipulators thread was up to 34.1 ms. Fps was 23.7.

Setting both terrain LOD and objects LOD to 10 only brought the fps back to 28….!

Restarting the flight from within MSFS restored the framerate.

Here I use 2 pc’s with exactly the same software and Addons.

My Left view pc does not suffer from this issue. Only my server.

It all stated after SU7…

You will notice as the manipulator threads response goes up, so is the mainthread. So somewhere in the code there is a process that get stuck in a loop. Some have suggested is the client that connect to azure and stream the scenery. If you turn off photogrammetry, the program kinda go away but who want to fly without photogrammetry.

If I disable Photogrammetry , Save and go back into the scenery the FPS is still low.

And why is this only happening on 1 of the 2 pc’s I wonder ….

This has always happened to me since Day 1 regardless of whether there is traffic or lots of weather.  I have always had a 50%FPS loss by final approach. Asobo premium airports are the worst especially Chicago and Atlanta.  I did Latin VFR New Orleans to Stock Asobo Atlanta with AIG on at 60%.  I was fine until final approach and all of a sudden the frames cut in half.  And once I turned towards the terminal it was slideshow city.  Happened to me yesterday doing FSDT Charlotte to Stock Chicago.  Frames were low on approach and once I was on the ground it was a slide show.  However, I did FSDT Charlotte to Drzewizcki Regan National and did not have that problem.   All flights were in the FBWA320NX.  I have noticed it has to do with duration of flight and how much information is accumulated during the flight.  I did Asobo SFO to Flightbeam Denver and even before descent the fps got bad.  To me it has something to do with RAM.

It's an old bug that's been around for a long time now, probably a memory leak

I don't have this--but I'm locked at 30 so may not see it as well.  I had this happen a few SU's back but once I learned to dial back Terrain LOD to 200-220 it's not happened again.  I was lulled into a false sense of security when I could leave a particular airport with LOD T at say 300 or more with great performance and assumed settings would be fine no matter where I flew into.  Once I learned the sweet spot I've not had this happen and 2-3h flights are routine for me.

I am happy for you that you found your sweet spot.
And indeed if you have put settings where your fps would not drop below 30 within 3h then you  can fly very well.
However, the issue still exists.

In my case my left view client pc remains its fps the complete 3h flight, while the front view server suffers from this fps drop issue.

If I take my flight from Amsterdam to Bodrum (Turkey) : the first hour nothing happens and main thread/manipulators are stable.
Then after 1.5h after passing the Alps slowly the framerate starts to drop.
After 2h I am over the Balcan and you can see the framerate drop by the minute.

It is like following a curve pointing upwards : for a while nothing happens and then it starts to appear and the longer I fly the faster the fps drop…..

After 3h I am left with 14 fps on my server. The client shows still a happy 30 with good main thread/manipulators values.
I need to say that the client is in a Slew situation and the server “pulls” this Left view client along.

Both have identical MSFS versions and have identical scenery/Addons installed.

That's interesting.

I have no experience with a network setup, but is it possible to swap the functions of your computers?

It would be interesting what happens then. It would help to see if some hardware or software setting outside of the sim is the (or at least a contributing) issue.

Another thing you could try is to make some flights outside of Europe. For me I regularly had the issue in Europe (flying across the Alps?). Now I have done several longer flights in the caribbean and the US east coast, without the issue occuring (or at least FPS remaining above my 30 FPS limit).
