I trust you have backups as drives don’t normally give notice of when they’re about to expire.

Sure do...all of them...including of course C drive, all images, that I create once per week on usually Sunday afternoon.  Of course Ray,  SSD's are not 100 percent reliable...they also scorf...so they should be backed up.  My C drive is a Samsung 860 EVO 1TB...but all my other internal drives are rock n' roll  Velociraptor 10,000 rpm spinners... 🙂 with four high TB size My Books (USB 3.0 ) sitting on top of the tower.

Three certainties in life... Taxes, Death and all hard drives eventually fail. 😁

My netbook which feeds my weather website was bought in April 2009. The HDD finally failed in April. 12 years is pretty good. My SSDs on my flight sim PC are still going strong. 👍

I must say...v5.3 with all the added PBR surfaces..is a REALLY good lookin' sim!  Up here at 35,000 ASL, with E.A. on, (no Vol Clouds...turned off), Active Sky giving me what there is out there at 35,000 feet over (coming up on Ohio from Michigan) and on my way mid state to KPGD in Florida.  Soon into heavy Dusk..and the sim, the terrain...really no second fiddle to MSFS, not at all.  A different look, but not a really 'aged' look.  One can easily use both...for one for Commercial, and the other for G.A.  Good stuff!

So...I'm now getting totally satisfactory performance, enjoying all the PBR 'goodness'

What did you actually do?

Intel i7 6700K @4.3. 32gb Gskill 3200 RAM. Z170x Gigabyte m/b. 28" LG HD monitor. Win 10 Home. 500g Samsung 960 as Windows home. 1 Gb Mushkin SSD for P3D. GTX 1080 8gb.

I spent the morning rearranging all my 3rP content in the Scenery.cfg, to allow me finally to get a pretty much constant 27-33 FPS with the sim as I have posted earlier in this thread. Nothing has changed from that posting sim feature set configurations.

I was having 3rP conflicts (for instance, Misty Fjords sceneries  conflicting with Global Base textures (they seemed to be 'fighting' each other for dominance in a scene...., rendering mispatched textures on geographical structures, stuff like that.). In otherwords, it was a 3rdP Layering issue(s). Got them all sorted out...so the Graphics rendering engine isn't being pulled this way and that,  in a manner of speaking...  Everything working like clock work now, and visually looking great. FPS stay pretty much, between 27-33 in all scenes, with my sim as I have posted earlier...

Are you not tempted to buy an SSD. Performance-wise it will make a big difference in load times.

Well, Ray, temptation won out...

I just bought a Samsung EVO 870 2TB internal to run both P3D v5.3 and MSFS.   I hope to see a marked improvement in both P3D and MSFS loading in times...as well, as perhaps the best possible outcome for no animation pause at any time due to read cycles from the SSD, rather than my present 10,000 rpm Western Digital Velociraptor.  I was waiting for that 'great deal' Pre-Boxing Day Sale, and got $100.00 off the normal selling price. over the last few months.  So, will wait for delivery and slap the puppy in, after cloning. Let's see if an SSD makes any true difference to flight sim (actual performance) as well as load in times.  This will be my first SSD to support exactly that. Always has been hard drives to date.

@Sesquashtoo, Good choice. I’m sure you’ll see a difference. Don’t forget less heat too. 👍

Yep, can't wait to slap this in...and the 'plan' is to eventually replace all my internal spin hard drives with such as this.  Because there is a predicted (by the tech) life expectancy in read and write cycles, I will still use high capacity HD's (spin) for archive and System Image storage.  So,  I most likely would only 'repack' my internals with no more than a 2 TB SSD capacity, as I expect that they will fail at a pre determined read write aging. So, that's the battle plan for SSD's, moving forward...lol.  2TB's per storage capacity each,  and no more... I have room for 8 hard drives on the hard drive bays...so 16 TB's should be more than enough for anything I might want to run, and store internally. And if not...too bad for me, LOLOLOLOL!  I'll 'live' with the limit...lol!

I used to have 2 Nr. Velocirapter drives in my old 980X system a good 10 years ago, in my early days of simming.  There was times I tried to create a RAID0 array to make them faster but they are still seriously slow compared to SSDs or even m.2 cards which are perhaps 10x faster than SSDs.  Ive changed my cpu a few times since I had the Extreme, and whilst it was expensive at the time (£750) I imagine its pretty slow compared to many of todays standard consumer cpus.  If memory serves me well I think the 980X had 6 cores (no Hyper Threading), at the time most just had 2 or 4 cores. It probably supported slower DDR3 memory too.  I think I still actually have the 980X gathering dust in a box in a spare room.

It does, but after I turned H.T. on in my BIOS, I forgot about it...having 6...and just kept posting 4.  My bad...

Further to my 'Methodical Installation of P3D v5.3...

For my own fact finding, I found out, that some of my Orbx titles and some from Misty Fjords  were in conflict, (by sleuthing my installtion FPS,  and what and how things were rendered) and through a few days, found out a solution was to manually edit my 3rP titles in the Scenery.cfg file...and the following shots is the result.  I am now getting very good and sustainable FPS,  with E.A. on as you see here,  (a bad weather day near the Mackinac Bridge and Island) and with Rob A's JobScheduler entries, I get no blur, I get solid and smooth animation,  and everything now, grapically visual is sharp and crisp, at 130 knots, and even higher.  No lag, to 'clear up and focus' Orbx Global, LClandclass, H.D. Buildings, Flora 2 trees, HD trees, custom mesh, all now again in the sim and working great alonside each other...so here is a few shots with everything sorted out...all my Orbx (Global Section) in the sim, except Vector of which I have decided not to further use) and of course all my Airports, Regions, all of that, that was always in any of my FSX or P3D versions.

So, here is a fly over on a dull and hazy morning (this morning, Dec 11th, 2021) flying out of Mackinac Island  airport, towards a fly over of the Bridge, and then heading southbound towards KFNT (Flint-Bishop) for a landing.  I think that P3D v5.3 looks really tight and fabulous now...after all my 'growing pains' with the install:
