I also have been here from day one and totally agree with the above from abrams_tank. If anything it is better.

I would agree the weather engine has been improved with the inclusion of haze and fog effects, but the clouds have taken a step backwards.

To me its the weather engine and its connection to the code that actually draws the clouds thats the problem.  I think they are working on making more connections and more clouds and so some things aren't as they were.  But the sim is definitely still able to produce good looking clouds.  They're in there: (these are using weather presets)

The issue is there appears to be one cloud type in MSFS - cumulus.  All other clouds appear to be formed from cumulus.  Cirrus is missing entirely.  What you are seeing as stratus is actually flat cumulus lumped together to firm an overcast.

This is my impression as well, generally. The whole mechanism of taking what appears to be thick flat plates superimposed on each other to create volume seems like it is going to be subject to some serious limitations, whereas using truly 4 dimensional volumetric structures *should* have unlimited scope of what can be created.  Just a wild guess based on how MSFS clouds look especially from certain angles and in particular up close.  I still strongly believe MS/A is nowhere near done w/ the basics here and I hope it's an area they prioritize sooner than later.

I just watched a screenshot thread at SOH from release date and I do not see better clouds than I have today. Some look even worse but that could be due to less than Ultra setting from the poster. My guess anyway is, that weather presets look better than live weather generated clouds sometimes do.

Absolutely concur with that.  I think for me it's up close where it has deteriorated in the last few SUs.  The lack of variability in basic cloud types has always been present.

Lately I've been wondering what it would look like if they added graphics to some of the winds in the sim.  They do this in their demonstration videos using blue lines but why not use a more cloud like or fog like wispy line and let them show up at high altitudes to maybe represent cirrus or flowing over the tops of some mountains or hills for better fog.  It wouldn't/couldn't be that all winds would be graphically illustrated but rather that where some winds create enough turbulence/interference with other winds, there you might see the interference pattern.
