February 3, 20224 yr Author Yesterday I checked out solar in my area. 15,000 dollars for a 500 watt system. 11000 after rebates etc. I think I'll pass. My house has a pitched tile roof that's probably over 90 years old. I don't want to destroy it's looks with a bunch of solar panels. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

Of course the British tanks are the most beautiful in the world.

That serves a family of three. In dollars that's about $8000 I reckon. Solar will certainly buy us time until we can hopefully figure out alternatives that don't kill us slowly. I do agree that solar power is the most viable long term. The technology has been around for a long time and is tried and true. As solar becomes more efficient and affordable and, just as importantly, the batteries become more energy dense and longer lasting, it can become the primary power source. I just don't think we're quite there yet, so we still need other sources. I don't think nuclear, that is, the modern reactors, not the 1960s and 70s technology reactors like most of the ones in use, should be ruled out entirely. Like I've said before, 30-50 years from now I don't think we'll be using fossil fuels on a large scale like we do now, which is a good thing. I can go online right now and get 600 watts of panels (output less of course) for about $700. Its actually my next step in my battery backup system for the next power failure. Currently I recharge the battery with my gas generator. The battery can run my full size fridge for nearly two days straight. and its stone cold silent and I can keep it indoors. I began playing (literally) with solar a couple years ago when I bought a small battery and a small panel. I have a little desktop DC fan that I run with it. I have another very small battery and an inverter that can run a fan and a light for a while...I just need to buy a bigger battery for that setup. My main system is 24Volt with provably 2400WattHours. I'd love to go grid tie solar but where I live the people in charge have decided to make solar the most expensive way to go by actually charging you for energy you try to add back to the grid.
