Why do this?

I know for many this probably silly but......

Why when mentioning people in posts here and elsewhere, do people write @jim or @sally when mentioning them. (I would just say, "as Jim or Sally said previously".)

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

because if you do this a message will appear in your notification box (the bell shaped icon) warning you that somebody mentioned you in a post,    @IanHarrison 😉

Social media.

Yes, I have heard of that😁 but why I would need to be warned if someone mentioned me, that escapes me.

(Unless they were serial killers, of course).

Maybe someone thought you might be interested in a specific thread, or that you could help answer a particular question. With the many, many threads, posts and questions on a site like this, it would be easy for you to miss them.

yeah ... and somehow it seems rude to talk about somebody and not let them know you are doing it if you can at all help it.  many times I just remember seeing something written and I have no idea who said what.  But if I think someobody can help or should see a topic, its a pretty cool way to 'call' them - like a Bat Signal.

@🙀

Never reffer to a cat the way I have above. They hate it. Above was just an example that the feline "Operation Earth" committee allowed me to use.

Cos they get notified of the response... it's rather convinient rather than having to constantly recheck every thread you posted in.
