I have a dilemma

Featured Replies

I'm flying around the world in MSFS. So far in 80 flights or so I flown from Victoria BC to Capetown South Africa. My route is over the poles. The longest leg so far has been no more than 2 hours and I'd like to keep it that way. So how do I get from Cape town to the coast of Antarctica in short hopes. I was thinking I'd fly the F-18 and strategically place a few Aircraft Carries along a route. But I don't think there is a way of placing Aircraft Carriers where you want in MSFS 2020? My other though is that I'd use P3D V5 for this part of the journey! 🙄

Don't think you are going to win this one! A couple small islands with no airports lie between Cape Town and Antarctica. I hear a rumour that a Concorde is due to be released soon. While it could operate into/out of Cape Town, not too sure it will end well landing that in Antarctica. And No, P3D doesn't count! That's just cheating. 🙂 Your best option, turn around and route back up Africa, across to the USA and then down South America to make the crossing off Argentina. Only another 80 flights or so.

I was just on ForeFlight to see what's possible. That is a NO GO from Cape Town. You could do it from Argentina, but not Africa. I even looked for small islands with glaciers (land with skiis). Sorry.

You could go from Tasmania -> McMurdo -> Machu Pichu Base -> South America, provided you can do 2500nm legs

I've never messed with carriers in MSFS (DCS is just too good in this regard, so no need), but surely if carrier templates can be created like the ones linked above, then they can be edited?

Otherwise, you've kind of gone the wrong way ;).  I'd probably use the DC-6 and save/resume en route, but if you want to land, maybe a flying boat design like the Goose and spend a few nights at sea ;).

I can think of three options:

  • wait on the upcoming Boeing B314 clipper
  • something military with mid air refuelling ability and short field landing capability, not sure what we have that would work
  • do what you would do in real life, get something with reasonable range like the twin otter (1400nm in the long range version) and add a ferry tank. Simplest way to do this is modify the config file for more fuel.

Here is the map with all the carriers, which are provided by the Aircraft Carrier Group packages 1 and 2 packages:

Maybe your required hops are possible using these packages?

Thanks, I do think this is my best option. I message the devs to see if its possible to edit the locations of the carriers. If it is I'll put a line of them between Capetown and the Antarctic coast and hope across in the F18. From the last carrier I'll fly something with skids and head for the south pole if its possible. However, I've tried loading up flights at the south pole and its a very strange place indeed. One really feels like one has entered the Twilight Zone!😨

Super Connie???

Records
Sleek and powerful, Constellations set many records. On April 17, 1944, the second production C-69, piloted by Howard Hughes and TWA president Jack Frye, flew from Burbank, California, to Washington, DC, in 6 hours and 57 minutes (about 2,300 miles (3,700 km) at an average 331 miles per hour (533 km/h)). On the return trip, the aircraft stopped at Wright Field in Ohio to give Orville Wright his last flight, more than 40 years after his historic first flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. He commented that the Constellation's wingspan was longer than the distance of his first flight.[3]

On September 29, 1957, a TWA L-1649A flew from Los Angeles to London in 18 hours and 32 minutes (about 5,420 miles (8,720 km) at 292 miles per hour (470 km/h).[11] The L-1649A holds the record for the longest-duration, nonstop passenger flight aboard a piston-powered airliner. On TWA's first London-to-San Francisco flight on October 1–2, 1957, the aircraft stayed aloft for 23 hours and 19 minutes (about 5,350 miles (8,610 km) at 229 miles per hour (369 km/h)).[12]

The DC6 also could do it, 2900 mile range more or less with a payload, more with max fuel.

Question is whether there is anywhere for a Connie or DC6 to land.

You can place existing scenery objects (e.g. the carriers after installing the linked packages) freely using the scenery SDK in a very basic way. There is many good information how to start, like e.g. this one.

Seaplanes would be another possibility, especially the upcoming Dornier Wal, which was used for a failed attempt by Amundsen to overfly the North pole. There were even Antarctics expeditions with Wals by the Germans in 1938. So you could simply land on the water anywhere and simulate refuelling by a ship.

I'd wish someone would make a ferry tank addon one could use to top up the main tanks from the ferry tanks during flight.

FACT to FYWB (not an international airport, if that bother then use FYWH) to FHSH (St Helena Island, freeware airport available) to SBSV, then down the east coast to hop over to Antarctica?

I ended up doing FACT to EGYP. 3400nm. The in sim flight planner said it would be 7.5 hours and I could do it with a little fuel to spare at 25% load. It ended up taking 9.5 hours and I have to top up the tank. In fact I'd guess I used double the amount of fuel the flight planner indicated. 🤣
