PMDG: Is there still a custom key assignment option?

Featured Replies

I wonder if anyone can answer this question about the PMDG 737 for MSFS;

In the FSX/P3D versions, there was an options page in the PMDG options section of the FMC for assigning custom key commands, for things like the the MCP modes.    Is that still a function of the MSFS version?

Having to use the mouse to engage the AP, turn the heading bug and change MCP modes would be a showstopper for me (although, if it's not available now, I'm sure it will come), hence the question.

TIA.

Bill, no luck with that. Also a problem with the MD-82. I’ve asked around, seems it’s a sim limitation.

ive been playing with axis and ohs this evening, along with voice attack and vJoy. There’s likely to be a way to control the necessary functions without a mouse (in this case, I’m trying to build a script for FO to set up the overhead).

Oh, and quite a few of the MCP functions do work fine with the default sim commands. Probably 85% of the ones I wanted, also a few oddities like heading hold in the sim menu = heading select on the PMDG, autopilot on seems to be best for disconnecting the AP, things like that.

cheers!

Cheers for the confirmation Oz, much appreciated!

Great to know that at least some of the main MCP functions are mapped to the default MSFS commands; that would probably do me for now.  I'm guessing it's LNAV and VNAV that aren't yet mapped to anything yet.

LNAV, VNAV and VS from memory.

I’ll test it next time I fly (should be able to get back to it later today).

Controlling the MCP without a mouse is very important to me, just like it sounds like it is to you. I’ve got switches and buttons set up for the default MSFS commands, and was pleasantly surprised that most functions on my hardware worked “out of the box” with the PMDG. Fabio had told me there were no key binds in the CDU, so I was worried the MCP would be hard to control - not really.

The next step is to work out which LVARs correspond to the missing functions, and then work out how to best control them - probably using SPAD.nxt or Axis and Ohs.

In these cases I used to use mouse macros in FSUIPC. Sadly, they are not yet available in FSUIPC 7.

Yes, count me in. Nothing worse than fiddling with tiny clickspots in stressful flightphases while also wearing a head tracker.

With AAOs I tried to read LVARs from sim and, after that in the Local simulator variables list, I found a lot of strings similar for example at "L:switch_55_73X, Number | Settable: Y". Those switches are listed in the PMDG_NG3_VC_700.xml file (and also in the BBJ and BDSF), but unfortunatly, I'm not able to understand if they can be useful or not.

Did you already checked them?

Indeed, I should have come back to this thread to say that I had found a script for AAO (Axis and Ohs) that uses LVars and HVars, and provides full keyboard assignment for all MCP controls.  😎

Everything works beautifull; LNAV, VNAV buttons, etc.

Here it is (but you need AAO for it to work):-

I’m not an expert on finding LVARs, though i’m hoping to become one!

So far, using scripts found on flightsim.to, mainly the one by Guenseli but there are others.

Using a combination of voice attack, vjoy and AAO, I’ve now got the FO setting up the plan from cold and dark, including engine starts.

I also managed to get the FO programming the CDU yesterday, though the company route needs my input.

PMDG 737 actually seems easy to control. I just need some more EFIS functions, TCAS and a few other things.

Edit: Zetato - I’ve also been setting up the FA announcements etc in Italian, in view of the recent world update!

I have many pieces of hardware and would like to try to map most of the model switches to start from cold and dark by myself.
Thanks for the translations, but think that I use the simulator in English because the translation into Italian of many commands did not seem correct.

Sorry if I'm so noob, I imported the script into AAO, but now I'm not able to find the command list in the simulator events when I'm going to map a key....

Can you give me a fast explanation of the process?

Edit: sorry, my fault, I did not select the script box, now, the import process started, seemed to be stuck, but after a forced close/restart of AAO I find the command list.

It's a great work! Just a question, I have a lot of switches, so, for me should be better to change from toggle to ON/OFF the function of many of that, for example, I want to manage the LIGHT TAXY TOGGLE to change it in LIGHT TAXI ON (switch in key down) and LIGHT TAXY OFF (switch in key up), I think I need to change the two numbers after the 117 prefix of the command, but in wich way? I'm not clearly undertstand the codes in the PMDG_NG3_VC_700.xml file..

Thanks!

Just a heads up: the beta Multicrew Experience was released a couple days ago for the PMDG 737.  Verbal commands and checklists are another option, vs keybinds... MCE works great with the 737.

Buongiorno Mauro,

For a 2 way switch, I don't think you need to use the 'key down' and 'key up' functions of AAO.   I think you would simply assign 2 different commands.  Eg.  assign "TAXI LIGHT ON" and then trigger your hardware switch into it's on position and save that entry.   Then set up a new entry, assigned to "TAXI LIGHT OFF" and assign that to your hardware switch flipping into it's off position, and save.

Both of those two events would be set as "key down" events.

in bocca al lupo!
