May 21, 20224 yr Good post, I'll have to sit down and watch this. Just so happens that I downloaded the GotFriends Discus 2c yesterday. Haven't tried it yet, but it features built in tow and includes gliding weather presets. Might have to do some soaring over Italy this weekend. https://flightsim.to/file/25518/discus-2c-glider https://flightsim.to/file/31790/discus-2c-glider-livery-pack
May 28, 20224 yr I'm really glad you posted this Jcomm, because I just had an awesome flight in the DG-808S. I tried the GotFriends Discus 2c and it's fun, but it's a bit basic because it doesn't have flaps. The 808s is more advanced due to it's flaps, and it's a real pleasure to fly. The Discus has rope towing built right into the mod. The 808 has a built in mini-jet engine that is stowable. The 808 supports tow rope and tow plane if you install Kinetic Assistant, I did not install KA. (Kinetic Assistant also adds thermals) I used a flight plan and a weather preset provided for a GotFriends Discord community flight. It starts in the Alps, and ends in Milan. https://discord.gg/4SyuWZwq I had plenty of ridge lift the entire way, and it was fun managing lift with the flaps. That DG can haul but with negative flaps. Sweet bird. Here is the DG-808S, https://flightsim.to/file/30384/dg-flugzeugbau-dg-808s
May 28, 20224 yr Just found the Payware version of Kinetic Assistant on sale at SimMarket for EUR 5.40. Can't wait to watch a tow plane tow me aloft again in a MS sim. Kinetic Assistant even lets you pick the tow plane, or use human tow pilots. It also has birds to indicate thermals, cool. https://msfs.touching.cloud/mods/kinetic-assistant/

I've gathered the resources, now I have to find the time to figure out this type of flying. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700F CPU @ 2.90GHz (8 cores) Hyper on, Evga RTX 3060 12 Gig, 32 GB ram, Windows 11, P3D v6, and MSFS 2020 and a couple of SSD's
May 29, 20224 yr Author Waldo and jim, glad you're enjoing "soaring in MFS"... It's not perfect, specially the flight dynamics component which leaves a LOT to e desired, but scenery wise it is what I have been using for my RL task testing / exploration and debrief. In real life I flew very few gliders with flaps. Presently I only operate 1 Phoebus and two LS-1 c gliders, all with retractable gear, all Standard Class hence with water ballast too. I used one of the features of Kinetic Assist to couple MFS and the Discus 2c ( but any glider will do ) with my preferred soaring navigation and flight computer app: xCSoar, and Top-Hat. I can use both Apps I use IRL in the glider to get the exact same indications ! May 29, 20224 yr I live in an area that's flat as a pancake, no ridges. Lift around here comes from thermals over parking lots, highways, and plowed fields. That and the beaches. I have 7 hours in an SGS 2-33A, which is a flying brick by today's standards. 😁 I think I'm going to find a local instructor this summer and get back into it. Preferably one with a modern aircraft.
May 29, 20224 yr Author Waldo, that's Great ! The SGS looks a lot like the Rhonlerche I used to fly in the early 80s, with an even worst glide ratio. Also flew back then the Great ( Heavy for sure 🙂 ) Bergfalke III Edited May 29, 20224 yr by jcomm Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
