May 23, 20224 yr Maintenance and operating costs are where the big bills come into play. With AVGAS pushing $7/gal, and an uncomplicated major overhaul of a recip engine at $15-20K, it's still not cheap. I have a friend with a Grumman Yankee that he bought for something like $6,500. It's due a major on the engine--five or six years ago I think that was gonna cost him $12,000. So it's been sitting in the hail shed collecting cobwebs ever since. The admission fee hides the real cost of ownership... something I'm reminded of often.... 🙂
May 24, 20224 yr I took my first flying lessons and fist soloed in a Luscombe 8E...on floats. I loved the stick. Pretend it was fixed to the floor of the aircraft and whichever way you moved it the aircraft responded. Noel Edited May 24, 20224 yr by birdguy The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
