Milviz (Turbo) Otter at Half Moon Bay...

Featured Replies

While looking through the Orbx SALE for a new (fun) airport, I picked up KHAF (Half Moon Bay) for my Northern California (NCA) region. KHAF is a small but picturesque (coastal city) airport about 25 miles south of San Francisco across from the San Francisco Bay. It's called "Half Moon Bay" because of its crescent shape (see aerial pictures below). Next, a short while ago, I'd purchased, together, the (Milviz) Bobcat and (Milviz) Otter, and recall posting, here, about the Bobcat, but I hadn't got to explore the Otter till today. I'm thinking, maybe, I should have first got the Milviz "DHC-3 Otter" instead of the "DHC-3T Turbo Otter" (note the "T" in "3T")...the reasoning being Turbo Otter is bit of a misnomer because no DHC-3 Otter was ever commercially factory-produced by the de Havilland Canada company, but only as post-factory (turboprop) conversions, though quite popular and widely deployed in commuter and tourism sectors, especially in the west coast of North America e.g., the (well-known) Harbour Air, of Vancouver (BC), operates 22 DHC-3T Turbo Otters (see one image below, the first shot)...

I learned, "Indeed, the only time that the factory ever installed a PT-6 turboprop on an Otter was when they installed two of them on RCAF #3682 for testing STOL capabilities. The eventual outcome of that testing is well known - the DHC-6 "Twin" Otter." Unlike the DHC-3 Otter, the DHC-6 Twin Otter, came, of course, only as a Turboprop...

(Re-engined) DHC-3T Turbo Otter is typically equipped with one of two variants of P&W Canada Engines (PT6A-27 and PT6A-34). Milviz's Turbo version is modelled after the PT6A-34 engine (see one close-up frontal view of this engine, below, at rest; the distinctive shiny and pointy nose being a common design feature of all such turboprops)...Anyway, I might get the (Milviz's) standard DHC-3 (Piston Prop) Otter too one of these days...a good one it must be...!

And please excuse, for this post, I have so far got to read the User Guide and only play around a bit with Milviz's excellent (MVAMS) User interface for this a/c (see shots #3/#4), which is a wonderful (and very efficient) tool to set the options for your chosen a/c (e.g., radios and GNS/GTN variants, loads/configurations, engine states, and other visuals etc.). If you wish, please also see Milviz's highly configurable B737-200 a/c manager in my previous post.

Now about the KHAF scenery, Orbx developers are said to have made multiple visits to the site for imagery, and it shows e.g., the (aviation themed) 3-ZERO CAFE (with its curious Rwy 30 replica leading to the doorway of the Cafe; see shots, below, note though, in the overhead shot, that both ends of this mini Rwy are marked "30"...🙂...), has got a special mention by Orbx, "the spectacular coastline around the airport makes for a truly amazing approach, and when you land, you’ll surely have a great meal waiting for you at the Three-Zero café." [Side Note: The 3-ZERO CAFE has unfortunately now closed after 25 years of operation in Half Moon Bay. The owners remain hopeful, though, stating, "Over the years, we did way more than just serve food. I am sure someone will take it over and it will be a better place in the future. If someone has an interest in aviation and good food..."]

Hope you enjoy this collection of pictures...of this scenic airport town with its rugged cliffs, pretty dunes, and golden beaches (see images) ..., and of the (classic and capable) single-engined (Turbo) Otter, though at rest here, that had flown for the first time more than 70 years ago and is still flying today.... (I wish to fly this Otter too, hopefully soon...🙂...in my virtual skies) ...!

Thanks for your interest...!! Good flying...!!

Really nice shots, P_7878. I especially like the two panel shots.

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds
