July 5, 20223 yr In a thread about drilling, maybe we should try to keep the ape part somewhat relevant? https://www.sciencefocus.com/news/chimpanzees-observed-digging-wells-after-being-taught-how-by-an-immigrant-female/ https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10329-022-00992-4 And the answer to Noel's hypothesis about us being an experiment, is 42.
July 5, 20223 yr Plausible doesn't need evidence. I think my theory of aliens possible having a hand in introducing us onto a planet in which we had no natural niche given our development is more plausible than mankind evolving naturally onto a planet in which be don't seem to belong. You are correct that it is an evolutionary process. But maybe evolution had some help when it comes to mankind. I think both theories are plausible. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
July 5, 20223 yr In James Michener's book The Source a group of hunter-gatherer cave dwellers were taught farming by an immigrant female. That is book is fiction, of course, but perfectly plausible. I would recommend that book to anyone interested in cultural evolution or development. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

Plausible does need evidence if you are going to take it seriously and believe it. And you don't have a theory or a hypothesis, its just wild speculation. The word you are looking for is "probable". Consider how probable, how likely, and considering there is zero evidence (and there should be evidence if it were true) perhaps you shouldn't take the concept you regard as "plausible" to seriously. And of course we had a natural niche. And of course we belong here. Just because we have evolved to the point where we dominate, and have developed technology that is in some respects is damaging, doesn't mean aliens tweaked our DNA. Don't blame alien tinkering, we are fully responsible for the good stuff we do and the bad stuff. No biologist, anthropologist or geneticist has reported any anomaly in our DNA that would suggest alien intervention. Its also not needed to explain what a Human Being is today. Is it impossible? No, but If we go around believing such things despite zero evidence, then we will be believing in fairies at the bottom of the garden, Thor, Odin, Loki, the Roman gods, Zeus, Athena, sun gods, water spirits, and all manner of imagined concepts. When someone comes up with even a shred of evidence, then maybe take it seriously. Until then, have fun, but it will be just pure speculation based on zero evidence. Quote I think both theories are plausible. Evolution isn't just "plausible" its pretty much fact (and aspects are theory). The fact of evolution comes from observable evidence of current processes. Alien tinkering has zero evidence. We have drifted as far off topic as can be. Might be a good idea to get back to the new gyrotron drilling tech before we get told off. 😉 Edited July 6, 20223 yr by martin-w
July 6, 20223 yr Author Here's a question: Billions have been spent on nuclear fusion. In fact its impossible to count how many billions. Deep geothermal drilling technology, utilising this new gyrotron method, seems to offer a quicker cheaper route to abundant power. So should we now divert a fair chunk of those billion in this direction? The amount of energy available from deep geothermal drilling is staggering. Is it a better direction? Multi-terawatts available to power our civilisation, and the ability to utilize existing fossil fuel assets supply chains and regulatory framework. Infrastructure is already there, no need to create it from scratch. 20 kilometres and 500C awaits us. I'm not saying abandon all fusion research or cut it down significantly, it's obviously important to continue. But is it time to divert some of those funds in the direction of deep geothermal drilling, now a means to achieve that is here. Quote Our gyrotron-powered drilling platform vaporizes boreholes through rock and provides access to deep geothermal heat without complex downhole equipment. Based on breakthrough fusion research and well-established drilling practices, we are developing a radical new approach to ultra-deep drilling. First, we use conventional rotary drilling to get to basement rock. Then, we switch to high-power millimeter waves to reach unprecedented depths. Edited July 6, 20223 yr by martin-w

She doesn't really provide an answer to the question: how are we going to provide enough resources for billions more people? She simply says that neither extreme case, Malthusian overpopulation disaster or everything will be OK because the population will stabilize and technology will save us, is correct. Like so many things, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. Even developed countries are now struggling with lack of resources, so just imagine if developing nation populations continue to rise, which they likely will. Now imagine if more and more of those developing countries continue to develop and more of their populations start driving cars and running air conditioners. Not an encouraging scenario. I do believe that technology will partially come to the rescue, but it probably won't be enough. Did you see how much Nigeria's population is forecast to increase? It's staggering. They had better start learning how to build wind turbines and solar panels right quick. Oh wait, won't they need all that land for growing food? See what I mean? I recall that was a 35 MW plant. China, south Korea Malaysia India Vietnam, Austria France Italy Denmark Croatia and numerous other nations are either experimenting with the technology or have plants in operation. Not huge plants but plants all the same. If its the shading that confuses you, there are a number of crops that like shade, in addition, a trade off is made. Savings in evaporation, protecting the plants from heat dunnage and other benefits are present, There are pro's and cons like all things. Its not just plants, sheep are grazing under the panels in some plants. Quote Giant agrivoltaic project in China The Baofeng Group is building a 1 GW solar park which is hosting a goji berry plantation in the Binhe New District on the eastern banks of the Yellow River in the Ningxia Province. Around 640 MW have so far been grid-connected. Huawei is providing the inverters for the project. https://www.pv-magazine.com/2020/09/03/giant-agrivoltaic-project-in-china/ Edited July 6, 20223 yr by martin-w
