VOR stations seem missing in MSFS

Featured Replies

When doing a flight from ESML to ESGP I had two way points consisting of two VOR stations SVD 116.2 and BAK 112.7. But I could not receive any signal from either of them.
I have checked that my avionics is correctly set also checked with two planes. I created this plan in Plan-G with MSFS data to be displayed. And these VOR stations are shown to exist in Plan-G.
Then I also tried creating the flightplan within MSFS and selecting VOR to VOR. Then the two VOR got included in the flight plan. I don't understand this.

SVD/SVEDA (116.20) and  BAK/ BACKA (112.70) have since long been "degraded" to DME only, to cater for enroute RNAV capability within Sweden FIR.
BAK in 2016, SVD in 2018. RNAV fixes have been co-located at these stations for RNAV usage:

SVD= ERNOV

BAK= ELBUX

That being said you should receive them as DME stations, unsure of at what range though.

Edit: Swap SVD for LJU (Ljungbyhed) and BAK with LAV (Landvetter VOR) to get a similar routing.

UK and USA are in the process of decommissioning many VOR stations. I am unable to quickly find any info for Sweden. Could they be slated for decommission?

EDIT: Thanks @SAS443 !!

My MSFS 2020 repaints: Flightsim.to - Profile of HStreet

Working on MSFS 2024 versions.

Considering the loss of VOR stations over time (I imagine this will just continue), I wonder if there's any way for someone to add historical VOR stations as a 3rd-party mod for people who still want to fly via radio navigation w/ older cockpits? Or maybe this has already been done?

Did you fly high enough to get a strong signal?

Yes I am quite sure of that. Got up to 4500 ft.

And I configured my Milviz C310 with radio only. I don't like GPS in sim aircraft.

But I did not receive any signal at all. No loc no dme information.

Regarding using LAV instead. That will take me over Landvetter airport where jet airliners fly. Would a small twin engine be allowed to fly there ?

Also if the VOR are not there why does MSFS assign them in my plan and give information about them. And why are they in Plan-G with MSFS data enabled ?

 if you look on the charts, both of these NAVAIDS are DME only facilities.  The VOR portion was decommissioned, as is happening in many places around the world.  In the US, this is part of the VOR decommissioning effort and VOR Minimum Operating Network (MON) effort. The VHF paired DME frequency is proivded so pilots can still obtain DME information from a VHF navigation receiver.

This has been recent topic of much discussion in the US.  Pilots are confused when they see DME only stations, especially when they are associated with airways, for the example the T-routes emanating from the Cape Girardeau (CGI) DME NAVAID in southern Missouri in the US.  It is interesting to note that these two DME only NAVAIDs also have a 5 letter waypoint collocated with them for the airway and route structure.  This is something that is being discussed in the US.

These DME only facilities cannot be used for VOR navigation.  They serve to support DME/DME and DME/DME/IRU RNAV navigation that is not dependent on GNSS or is a backup to GNSS.

Yes. Plan to keep Goteborg TMA (1500MSL - FL95) below you and check in with Sweden Control instead, and you should have no problems. We're talking +FL100 at least. Which should be doable in the C310 (don't own it)
