More specifically, they may be dimmed depending on SOP 🙂 Some do, some don't. If mixed fleet, mostly yes. If not, potentially not. Lots of different SOPs floating around across the multiple operators of the type 😄 We're looking into making panel states more robust, but it'll take some time. Aamir Thacker

For example, the CRTs should be dimmed for the reasons you mention, the LCDs don't really need it, but it doesn't hurt to do so, so an airline will "simplify" and just have it such that the screens should be dimmed as part of the secure checklist - prevents needing specific procedures for specific sub-models in the family. Makes sense. Although there are many checklists that read something like "(CRT) Displays ... dim" or "(700-900ER) Gear ... Off lights out" followed by the next line "(MAX) Gear ... Up", in which cases the same checklist accounts for the differences between aircraft. An LCD screen is very durable, but I think the light bulb (whether it's an actual bulb or not) for the display backlight is not as durable and turning down the backlight can extent its life, especially when the aircraft is on the ground powered up for longer periods of time, such as maintenance work, when the display aren't needed.
