These devices -- Streamdeck / Loupedeck etc.  -- what is their purpose?  Is it a less expensive and more multi-use alternative to this:

I just ordered one of these yesterday to try out. I have a Streamdeck XL which I love and find extremely useful but love the idea of the 6 rotary dials so want to have a play.

There's more user created apps for streamdeck than for loupedeck.

Axis and Oh's has a doohickey of some sort to convert 32 button streamdeck profiles to 15 button streamdecks. I haven't investigated that app yet.

I have 15 button SD. All the little 3/4"square buttons are mini display monitors. For instance you can make one tiny button light up and be a mini HSI readout gauge. It's bright and fairly easy to align your trims to straight and level.

The big advantage of Streamdeck (I can't speak for Loupedeck but I imagine it's the same) is that they aren't just a passive button box - you can write information to the LCD displays behind each button in real time so you can show values, change colours or symbols etc in response to presses and the aircraft state etc. So if you want you can have up to 32 individual data displays configurable as you want.

I'm interested in buying SD but I don't know LORBYs AAO at all.
I use Spad.NeXt for which I bought a license to configure my controllers.
I agree to also buy a license for LORBYs AAO but I don't have much time (and especially patience!) to learn how to use it.

My question is: If I use the profiles for SD available on flightsim.to, do I also need to know how to use LORBYs AAO? Or can I just run LORBYs AAO with the profiles I'm interested in without worrying about how it works??

Spad has very similar support for streamdecks as AAO so if you already have that and are comfortable using it there isn't necessarily a reason to switch.

That would be the Lorby StreamDeck Editor. It is a separate thing, not related to the AxisAndOhs app. It works for all StreamDeck profiles in general, with a drag&drop interface. You install the 32 button profile, then use the editor to drag the buttons onto a new or existing 15 button small profile.

No, you don't have to read the 130 pages users manual if the StreamDeck is the only feature that you use. Seems like a bit of a waste though.

There is a DEMO version of AxisAndOhs where you can try it out. The challenge is usually network security. The AAO StreamDeck wants to access the API in AAO which is based on simple web technology. But todays local network security often gets in the way even of the simple things. So checking out the DEMO is pretty much mandatory.
