I just dumped V5 and went back to V4 Ray.  I don't like the haze in V5.

Fair enough. I don’t run with enhanced atmospherics enabled as I don’t like the effects. Did you try with that disabled?

Then I have to reinstall all of my Orbx scenery again.  But I just may do that.  This talk about mklink and Link Shell Extension frightens me.  My learning curved has flattened out with age.  I have a difficult time trying to learn anything new.  I miss DOS and BASIC.

Install your ORBX using Central overnight while you sleep.

On the control panels under weather I have enhanced atmospherics unchecked.  That reduces the effect but it does not eliminate it.  It there another way to do it?

Noel

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

No I’m afraid. A certain amount of haze exists in the real world.

It's really not that complex.  The mklink command establishes what's called a "symbolic link" from one directory path to another--any time the OS does an operation on a file defined by a path to the linked (old) directory, it goes instead to the target (new) directory.  So you move your entire P3D folder...let's say it's C:\P3Dv4, to another drive, let's call it the E: drive.  So everything that was in C:\P3Dv4\ is now in E:\P3Dv4\.  Then you open an admin command window by typing cmd into the search tool, and click on "run as administrator".  In there you type: mklink /d C:\P3Dv4 E:\P3Dv4   That tells the OS that any time it sees a filename with a path that starts with C:\P3Dv4, point it instead to E:\P3Dv4.  You continue to use P3D as if it were still installed on the C drive...in fact you can then install new addons to C:\P3Dv4\.... and they'll be automatically placed on the E drive folder as if it were still on the C drive.

However many minutes it might take to do a little research to make this simple redirection work has to be a whole lot less time and butt pain than a complete reinstall and all the configuration work that goes with it.

Not all of the real world Ray.  Not in my part of the world.  No industry to speak of for several hundred miles.  Almost 200 miles to the nearest interstate highway.  Elevation over 3600 feet.  Most days I can look west driving down Montana Avenue and see the crest of the Sacramento Mountains (Sierra Blanca over 12,000 feet high).  No haze.

There are problems with haze levels being too obvious at high altitude so this is something inherent in the core product. You should post your feelings on the P3D forum. Posts are read but rarely replied to since there is no support offered.

Noel, just having turned 75 myself, I think we are in the same boat. I can kind of follow the discussion about mklink and Link Shell Extensions, but applying it, when I don't fully understand it, is a different matter. And anyway, there's the old "Keep It Simple" saying.

Reinstalling ORBX is not too difficult, just takes a little time.

And I have v. 5.3 HF2 myself, and I don't see any haze as you describe it. But I have EA turned off....

Jorgen, it's hard to explain to people that what you once knew and could do you no longer can do.  I'm afraid to try to apply anything I don't fully understand because I might end up worse than I am now.  It's simple for people in the know.  Not so simple for we who have forgotten a lot of what we used to know and have a difficult time trying to learn anything new.

Installing the P3Ds is turnkey.  The same with Orbx sceneries.  It's easy for me to modify panels because I learned how a long time ago and did it enough that it's hardwired up there.

I've forgotten a lot of what I used to know and trying to recall it is a chore.  My wife and I will be watching a movie on TV and she will ask me the name of an actor or actress playing in it.  I just can't recall the name right away but 15 or 20 minutes later it will pop into my head.  I remember when my Dad wasn't even as old as I am now and how impatient I was that he couldn't remember what it was I wanted him to remember.

From now on I'm just going to go with what I already know how to do and stop asking questions.

As far as turning off the haze in V5 turning off EA reduces it but does not eliminate it.  Maybe it's my system.  But I'm just as happy flying V4 for the type of flying I do as I was flying V5.

Noel,

Another option for you is to run V4 and V5 side by side like I do.

I run all my Milviz birds in V4 along with many other great aircraft that are not V5 compatible, the PBY for example. Lately I'm in V4 almost all the time not noticing any real difference.

I bit the bullet and uninstalled P3Dv4 on my C drive and have reinstalled it on the big drive.  I'm reinstalling my Orbx scenery on it now.  I'm just installing North America for now.  I'll get the rest of it when time permits.  Probably overnight like someone suggested.

Noel

Noel, this sentence says it all: "But I'm just as happy flying V4 for the type of flying I do as I was flying V5.". Happy with the kind of flying you do is the really important part.

At one time I had FSX, P3D v. 4 and P3D v. 5 installed on my system, but gave up on the first two because keeping everything updated etc. was simply too much work. Now I only have P3D v. 5, and I am still very busy with it.

Jorgen
