October 6, 20223 yr We get these a couple times a year. Five or six days of off and on light rain and drizzle. I saw it coming on Tuesday when I had my annual visit with the dermatologist. He's on the 9th floor of one of our two highrises that go 12 or 14 stories high. He has a West facing office and I couldn't see 'The Mountain' as we call Capitan Peak. A rare day of haze preceding the San Francisco weather as I remember it when I was growing up. We don't have to water the lawns for a couple of weeks and it cools us off with highs in the 70s instead of the 80s and low 90s. So Fall has arrived. Shut down the air conditioners. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
October 6, 20223 yr Air conditioners? I know you know more about The City than I, but I spent 20 years of my life working in The City I can never remember a day when air conditioning (in an office) was needed or desired. What did I miss? Or, does the memory of an old man fail him? God, I miss that town. October 6, 20223 yr Author Doug, I meant the air conditioners in my house. I'm talking about the weather in Roswell. As long as this 70 degree weather holds out I can turn them off. Re-read what I wrote. The rain has stopped for a while but it's only 66 degrees outside. Wonderful after an entire summer of uper 90s and 100+. Like Mark Twain said, "The coldest winter I ever spend was a summer in San Francisco." Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

Back in 1967-68 I had a good buddy who was flying A4A's off the Kitty Hawk. Let's call him John. The Hawk was based in Alameda then and the squadron was stationed in Lemoore NAS. There are two things I'll remember about his time there: We were living in Sacramento at the time and John invited us down to a squadron party at the Exec's house. It was a picture perfect night. Not too warm, clear skies, and just a little too much booze. My friend introduced me to the other pilots as an Air Force guy who flew F104's. The silence was deafening. My wife and I spent the rest of the night sitting by the pool talking to her girlfriend. About a month later the squadron was returning from an exercise and my buddy decided to fly under the Golden Gate Bridge. Inverted. Needless to say, the squadron commander was not pleased. And his next fitness report reflected that. His father was a retired Rear Admiral who had great hopes for his son. But John left the Navy and spent a very successful career at TWA. And such are life's memories........... October 6, 20223 yr Author Another adjunct to the Blue Angles reference. In 1958 I was serving at Selfridge Air Force Base in Michigan. That summer I saw my first aerial demonstration team. They were called 'The Minutemen' and they were from the Colorado Air National Guard. Fast Forward 30 years. It was 1989. It was my first duty day after I had joined the Colorado Air National Guard. When I drove in the front gate I saw one of the Minutemen F-86s on the display pad there. During my orientation I asked about that F-86. I was told it was the aircraft General France, the now Air National Commanding Officer, flew when he was a young pilot in the Guard. After lunch I reported to the Weather Flight. I was a staff sergeant since my previous rank was restored when I joined the Guard. My new commanding officer took me on the rounds to meet the people I would be dealing with and then he took me to General France's office for the perfunctory introduction for new guardsmen. The General and I shook hands and he welcomed me to the Colorado Air National Guard. He sat down and my commanding officer nudged me to leave. But I said, "General, in the summer of 1958 I think I saw you flying that F-86 at the front gate at Selfridge Air Force Base. I was just a young airman then but it was the first flight demonstration team I had ever seen." The general motioned my CO and I back and asked us to sit down. The general and I talked for several minutes and then my CO and I left. As we were returning to the weather flight office my CO said, 'You son-of-a-word not allowed. One day in the guard and you made your first friend and it was the top guy." Whenever I saw the general on base or in a hallway we always stopped and chatted for a minute or two. It didn't hurt for people to notice that. I was over 50 years old then and had just enough time left to serve the nine years to qualify for military retirement before the mandatory retirement age kicked in. My CO put me in for promotion as soon as I had the required time grade. I went from E-5 to E-8 in 6 years. He always had my general sign off on the promotion orders. Noel The tires are worn. October 8, 20223 yr Way back in 1965 I got a job offer from United at SFO. Junior airframe purchasing agent. The call with the offer got me out of bed at 6:15am. When I commented that the caller sure got to work early that day he told me that everyone was at work by 6am and usually went home about 5pm. I went to work for the telephone company.
