October 18, 20223 yr Hi there, A veteran sim pilot here, who moved completely to Linux (Pop!_OS) a couple of years ago. Back to refresh my PPL skills after a... short brake. Back in the day (FSX/P3D era), I've been addicted to experimenting with various registry settings, fsx.cfg tricks, tools like NVidia Inspector, complete setup-n-run guides like this giant one from NickN etc. to improve the simulator performance. Since I've been unable to get my hands on the Asobo masterpiece for technical reasons, I think I've missed a lot of development in the field. With new advancements in Linux gaming, I think I can now return to my passion again. So, fellow captains: 0- Do I generally need to go under the hood with FS2020 (remember himemfix=1 in fsx.cfg?), or the Asobo team was kind enough to relieve us the pain of the past FSX experience? 1- Can you please advise where I can read/watch some useful information with hassle-free installation and settings tips for a starter pilot? Some follow-up questions for Linux users (hey, a fellow Linus disciple here): 2- Is it possible to install 3rd-party addons (made obviously for Windows) like for weather generation on top of the FS2020 version bought from Steam? What about payware aircraft? Not interested in scenery that much thanks to flightsim.to. 3- Is there any functional/technical difference between Standard and Deluxe/Premium versions apart from aircraft and hand-crafted scenery? Also, I heard somewhere that say PMDG aircraft could be installed on Premium version only; but that might be false. Thank you! Edited October 18, 20223 yr by Bina Regards,Victor Quebec
October 18, 20223 yr 0) As far as I understand, no. 1) If you are willing to pay, there's the MSFS Guide at RD Presets. I'm not sure about guides other than NickN's one for FSX, which I used for setting up my rig before fiddling with MSFS itself. 2) WX generation? No. Payware aircraft? I've purchased some out of the Marketplace (which end up in the Community folder) and some inside the Marketplace (which end up in the official packages folder). 3) As far as I know, there's no technical difference. But I went straight to the Premium Deluxe version anyway. Running P3D v5.4 (with v4.5 scenery objects as an additional library, just in case), FSX-SE, MSFS2020, MSFS2024 and even FS9! Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .VKB Gladiator NXT Premium Left + GNX THQ as primary controllers. Xbox Series X|S wireless controller as standby/mobile.

No, but any addons (freeware or payware) that rely on the aircraft only sold in the Deluxe/Premium version obviously won't work. Quote 2- Is it possible to install 3rd-party addons (made obviously for Windows) like for weather generation on top of the FS2020 version bought from Steam? What about payware aircraft? Not interested in scenery that much thanks to flightsim.to. On Windows Steam version - yes. All Steam does is download a launcher. When running for the first time it will download and install the full game into a folder outside of Steam. Addons go into the Community folder it creates. Easy as. Good luck with Linux though.
October 19, 20223 yr Hello, You will find "how to" on this forum. Example You simply need Steam, a Linux package ( do not remember it's name, but I did post a message about it) Arch Linux is my main OS. I did use FS2020 under Linux, but performance is not good enough VS Windows (stutters, loading times) You cannot run FS2020 on a Windows virtual machine under Linux : performance issues too. I use Windows, just for Steam, FS2020, Little Navmap... Of course, you can try yourself to see how it works.
October 19, 20223 yr Linux? X-Plane? Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
October 19, 20223 yr There may be an option for Linux, but is subscription-only: have you tried using the cloud version of MSFS, and loading it from the browser? I made it work on Android (with the Xbox app) and I knew it could run in Mac (I don't know if Safari only or Chrome too). It would have the same limitations of the Xbox version (i.e, all addons wold have to be from Marketplace, and none of your purchases at Steam would be available). Some follow-up questions for Linux users (hey, a fellow Linus disciple here): I've heard from many that Steam is the best method of installing in general. Various problems w/ the M$ Store, etc. Given you know of protondb, you are probably aware that multiplayer doesn't work and there are plenty of reports of the streamed ortho intermittently not working (e.g. out for days or weeks at a time). I've also heard various reports of visual bugs (e.g. trees not displaying correctly). Performance runs the gamut. Some report poor. High end systems will obviously fare better. It would work on a windows VM if using GPU passthrough but this is not trivial to set up. Not ideal for the newbie or the faint-of-terminal. Friendly reminder: WHITELIST AVSIM IN YOUR AD-BLOCKER. Especially if you're on a modern CPU that can run a flight simulator well. These web servers aren't free...
