It's not that bad. 54C average from a LAX area flight in the analog King Air with max settings (TLOD150) and AI traffic.

Perfectly fine.  TLOD 150?  On that rig?  What?

Always TLOD 150 at KLAX and similar places. Even though the 4090 doubles the fps due to frame generation, the total fps will still be dragged down due to main thread limitation. I.e. actual fps something like 20-25 with TLOD150, the rest ultra, 4K, AI traffic with FSLTL models. I wouldn't even dream of running a TLOD of 400 at KLAX, lol.

based on the fact that both CPU manufacturers will release very very powerful CPUs allegedly in Q1/2023

Although Raphael-X is almost certainly getting unveiled at CES 2023, I'm not aware of Intel releasing a newer line-up until 2024. If you mean the 13900KS, that will be something, but the power consumption and thermals will be even more intense.

Could some kind soul compile a summary (maybe to be pined) of agreed statements which chips work best with MSFS

The best CPUs for MSFS right now are the 5800X3D (best average framerates) and the 13900K (best minimum framerates with good DDR5), but both are on platforms that do not have an upgrade path. The advice by turbomax is good, wait for AMD's 7000X3D series (by then AM5 motherboard and DDR5 prices will be even better), and your upgrade path will consist of Zen 5, Zen 5 with V-Cache and Zen 6 at least.

GFRY posted on the previous page a video with a test between the 13600k and the 5800x3d. The Intel performed better. I’m confused.

Didn't see that before, but I'm fairly sure it is one of those fake channels (there is one called "Testing Games" which is definitely fake for example). Despite being a very small channel, they have supposedly acquired a staggering amount of hardware the past month (13900K, 13700K, 13600K, 7950X, 7600X, RTX 4090, Arc A770, Arc A750) and managed to post footage with the RTX 4090 three days before the embargo. It is unlikely to be a legitimate one, so I would ignore these results.

Geez!  Sounds like 7800x3D is the place to be if not something after that.  I was excited to upgrade to 13900K but now I think I'll hold off until there's really a reason to upgrade perfectly decent hardware.  Cool matters a lot to me and I won't use water cooling but I do have lovely 40-60F air coming into the PC case and it really makes a difference.  In summer when the A/C kicks in we're at 40F incoming, in winter at ~60F.   By far what matters to me is executing perfect flights in APLv2, and right now I'm having a very hard time landing the 738 at less then 308fpm which APLv2 doesn't believe is good enough, though Dan Downs at PMDG forum says it's perfectly fine!  I have found RT traffic is harder than I thought when on top of the PMDG 738 on this rig.  So for now will just have to modulate settings a bit to keep everything golden, and that's fine.  And, if everyone is really lucky here someone will come out with that Dynamic Optimizer so we don't spend $3000 because of marginal performance upon arrival 😉

If you can't/won't wait until the 7800X3D starts shipping, you could always build a new machine using a 7700 or 7800 CPU now and then just do a simple CPU upgrade when the 7800X3D starts shipping. That's what I'm currently planning to do.

This is exactly my plan.

Personally I would wait for the 14th Gen Meteor Lake. The release in a year end 2023 should be more innovative.

I wouldn't hold my breath for Meteor Lake. According to newer rumours from reputable leakers, it will be a mainstream line-up and perhaps mobile-only (Intel have shared a die shot showing only 6 P-cores, which matches what the rumours said). The proper successor to Raptor Lake will be Arrow Lake in 2024, which means it will be competing with Granite Ridge.

I keep asking myself: is 25 fps on the ground during taxi really as bad as it sounds? all you do is taxi below 30 mph in 2D, not really much of a flight model required here. as soon as you take off, those AIs parked at their gates are out of sight, and AI traffic should be no factor, fps back to normal, i.e. lousy 50-60 in your case?

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

A fair point. Sub-30 fps could be fine, as long as it's smoooth.
