Top Gun lied to us

I think Austin Meyer has to be the best marketing asset in the whole of the flight sim genre, what a character.

Coincidentally , I had a play with the F14 in XP12 last night and found it a very pleasant aircraft to fly, the DCS version always seems a real handful.

Ive flown with a couple of guys who flew the F14, one amusing story one of them told me was from  his first carrier landing. As you know the technique on a carrier touchdown is to open the throttles full in case you’ve missed the wire.

On his first landing he was so stunned by the sudden deceleration on catching the wire he just sat there with the throttles fully open in a daze until a voice came over the radio from the carrier controller  and said “ boy, no matter how hard you try you ain’t gonna make this ship go any faster”

I feel Austin's pain watching this movie, although in this instance I wouldn't have noticed, however as an IT engineer, whenever I see how programmers/hackers are portrayed in films and their computer screens, it always makes me want to chime in and cringe with how so obviously bad and fake it is. From flashing matrix style unix terminals just showing HTML to progress bars that beep and flash as they move along... It drives me crazy

Actually it's no news that many things in movies are more or less faked. But in this case, we have the scientific proof - thanks to X-Plane 👍. And it shows that only after a deeper look/research many things get unhided.
