How to easily find water runways

Featured Replies

How to find water runways is a recurring question in the forums. Here is an easy way to find them, using Little Navmap:

1. In the Little Navmap search window, click on the "Any Surface" field to drop down the selection list.

     a. Select "Any is Water"

     b. Do not use any other filters (city, state, ... ) because many water runways do not list that info.

     c. Scroll down to the bottom of the list to ensure all items are visible. (the next step will only highlight the visible list)

2. Right-click on any row and choose "Select All"

3. All water runways will appear on the map as yellow circles.

4. See if a yellow circle is near your desired flying area.

5. Right-click on the desired yellow circle to see airport info, add it to your plan, etc.

6. Change the search selection back to "Any Surface" to restore the normal airport list.

I've been wondering how to do this with the great new float planes in the sim - Thank You!

The only problem with this for me is that I can't get Little NavMap to work.  It doesn't recognize my MSFS installation (even though I provide it with the exact info) and refuses to continue the setup.

I've set Little NavMap aside for now and will see what I can find out about this in the future.

Go to the Little Navmap forum here on Avsim and post your problem. He is very quick to respond.

Skyvector works pretty good.  Type PAJN on skyvector and look for the little anchor

Here is a list of ICAO's from water airports.

A few other good resources for float flying:

Canada (paid product)

Canada Water Aerodrome Supplement (eCWAS)

Note that this is not an actual subscription where they would bill your credit card automatically. You can pay once, and all they do is send you an occasional reminder that there's a new version available. Really adds some immersion to float flying for me, especially at busier places where you also get VFR Terminal charts.

U.S. (free)

FAA Digital Chart Supplement (d-CS)

Good info but I don't see any way to filter for float-plane airports only. A quick scan of the airport diagrams does make it obvious though which ones are water.
