December 18, 20223 yr Call me Windy, I soloed in the early 1960s commercial and multi-CFI-I ATP AGI-I. I was a flight engineer in 727s in the late 1960s when family emergencies sent me home to New England. I did flight instructions with the pre-flight and post-flight instructions out of the boot of my car with the flights in people's own or club aircraft. I continued with that while doing the part135 ME single pilot autopilot until I lost my 2ed class medical in 82, and other than providing free safety pilot and brush up flights for old friends (they could not log it as I had not even a 3rd class). I stopped flying entirely in 85, even as safety in light aircraft. Other health problems meant that I did not return to the cockpit, and in 2016 I broke my neck C2 😵💫in a fall and, over the next few years, had a series of TIAs and then in 2020, a proper stroke🤯. I seem to be on the mend, but due to PTSD from those events, my physical therapist and my shrink think taking flight simulation would be a good move. So I have with the help of a friend, I have commissioned a gamer rig with the proceeds of the sale of some of the family antiques ( My late Mother’s Winchester Model 21 20 gauge shotgun brought a great deal more than I thought it would and financed a good rig from Origin as below I have bought and installed X-plane 12 and the current MSFS (together with the OS the two full installations and a few other games I have used about 1/2 of that one terabyte boot drive.) the young friend that is helping me set up refers to the LED effects as unicorn 🦄 farts 😝.this is the spec. I hope it stays good for the next 2 or 3 years (but my young friend's brother says that the graphics card is no good according to his sources) ase : Corsair 4000D Airflow Exterior Color : Black HD UV Glass Print : Marble 2 Laser Etching : None Processors : AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 8-Core 4.5GHz (5.4GHz Max Boost) CPU : Thermal Compound Motherboard : ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-E WiFi Memory : 32GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 (2x16GB) 5600MHz System Cooling : iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLIX Liquid CPU Cooler System Fans : ORIGIN PC Standard Fan Kit Graphics Cards : Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 16GB Operating System : MS Windows 11 Home Operating System Drive : 1TB Samsung 980 PRO RAID : No RAID Power Supply : Corsair RM1000x Series PLUS GOLD Power Supply Sleeved Cable : No Sleeved Cable Audio : Integrated High-Definition Audio Networking : Onboard Network Port The ORIGIN Difference : The Best Gaming Experience Guaranteed - Neuron 4000 ORIGIN Maximum Protection Shipping Process : ORIGIN Wooden Crate Armor 24/7 U.S Based WarrantY I plan to start at the beginning and learn to fly all over again. I received a TCA Yoke Pack Boeing Edition that has just arrived as a winter solstice gift from my older sister.😁. Eventually, I hope to fly the 787 sim models since I have been told the graphics on the yoke are an excellent match 🤓 and they are so beautiful. Still, I will need to control some involuntary muscle twitching in my hands and make much more progress with the speech therapist before I get on the radios in the sims. Just one shaky finger typing and proofreading this note have taken several hours. Wish me luck. Perhaps in a year or so, if the gods smile at my efforts, I can become an asset to this community. Cheers Windy
December 18, 20223 yr Administrators Welcome to the AVSIM forums, Windy! 😀 Charlie AronAVSIM Board of Directors-ADMIN/Moderator-RegistrarJust going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!
December 19, 20223 yr Hi @Windshadow48! Welcome to Avsim. Regards your system and including your graphics card, you will be fine. That system will work for years to come. My system is almost 6 years old with a graphics card that is over a year old. All is working very well in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Good luck and look forward to seeing you around. December 19, 20223 yr Author Thanks, guys. I had about 6,500 hours over about 30 years of flying, including a few months delivering and collecting used aircraft for a dealer when I collected quite a few types for my log book just after I got my commercial in 68. Sometimes the check out consisted in reading the arcs on the airspeed indicator... Some of them had the tube type of coffee grinder radios.. But they are happy memories Cheers Windy

December 20, 20223 yr Author I have so many questions I don't know where to start; My plan is first to knock the bulk of the rust off with a lump hammer gently tapping on my noggin. That will be In the 172 as I had about 2000 hours giving instruction in them In the early 70s. The glass cockpit. Was just turning up at the bleeding edge of light planes in the 80s so I think that a big chunk of my learning in X-plane 12 and MSFS 40 version once I get my stick and rudder skills above ‘marginal’ will be be leaThe various glass cockpit systems. Any reading that you can point me to will be greatfuly received [when my primary students soloed I gave each of them a copy ly received [when my primary students soloed, I gave each of them a copy of “Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying by Wolfgang Langewiesche” and when they passed their private check ride they got a copy of “Weather Flying, by Robert N. Buck with a Foreword by Wolfgang Langewiesche“ and an admonishment that their fresh private pilot license was a license to learn.] Now it is my turn to put those words once again, into my own actions. This forum looks to be a most important learning aid as I stick my toe into what seems to be an incredi vibrant and deep world of Simulator aviation.

Hi Windy.. great resume, and welcome to Avsim! You have two sims installed, which will lead to no end of confusion.. suggest you choose one and stick with it until you are totally comfortable.. If you choose MSFS, which I would consider a good choice, start with the C152.. it has the familiar six pack and will serve you well as an initial trainer. Once you feel OK flying the C152, switch to the C172 and try out the G1000 (many videos on how to use it..) From there, try the G36 Bonanza... etc If you have questions, as I am sure you will.. post them in the MSFS2020 forum, that is where most of us hang out. Lots of helpful people to be found 🙂 Hope to see you there! ps Sent you a PM. 😉 Edited December 26, 20223 yr by Bert Pieke Bert
