My Upgrade to RTX 4080 (pics)

Recommended Posts

I've shared some thoughts in various threads but have not made my own.  I wanted to do an official one with pics etc.  Background: I built a completely new system last year (excluding GPU) which is a 12700K 4.7GHz / 32GB ddr5 5600 / GTX 1080 Ti / MSI Z690.

I ran with all high settings and some set to ultra such as Clouds and precache - all at 1440p.  I did identical tests to what I'm running below (for this mini benchmark I ran Ultra and LOD 200 with the 1080 Ti).  When I made the jump to the 12700K I shared my thoughts in thread in the main hardware area.  I came from a 4790K and essentially doubled my fps, in some areas 2.5x.  Last month I dropped 1400USD (incl taxes) on a RTX 4080 MSI Gaming X Trio.  Install was a bit of a pain - running the 3 pcie cables to my PSU was fun and required the use of my daughter's small hands hehe!  I also installed the anti sag bracket provided by MSI.  I'm still using display port same as with the 1080 ti.  I also have a 1080p secondary monitor with hdmi.  I'm running a evga 850w gold psu.  Also of note, Kill A Watt P4400 showed a max of 420w during these tests.  And during VR usage (HP Reverb G2) peak wattage was just over 500w.

Settings in MSFS:  DX12, DLSS3 Quality, Frame Generation (40xx cards only) ON, ULTRA presets except Terrain LOD 200.  FlyTampa KBOS RY27 (to see the terminal and photogrammetry city), FSLTL ifr 20 vfr 10, ramp 25 AI.  Scattered Clouds theme at noon in January.  (Minor note after the Longitude I accidentally switched to a custom sky - but I observed no difference in fps and it's similar to scattered theme).  DLSS3 yields better image quality on glass cockpits than dlss2 but it is a tradeoff.  TAA yields better image quality on glass but DLSS yields slighty higher fps.  A bonus is that Frame Gen can be used on TAA as well!

That's a boring wall of text so basically I went from 20-30 fps with the 12700K / 1080 ti to 70-110 fps depending on the aircraft with the 4080.  I would consider the testing scenario very grueling and am CPU limited now.  I hear the Fenix can be a bit tough on fps but I do not own it so I could not run a test.  I picked some familiar addons though.  Please note I am running AAU1 beta so some of the jets have the new G3000/G5000.

This first one was just in case people don't run AI at all - triple digit fps!

And then all remaining examples have the 20 ifr AI via FSLTL - vram usage pretty good with the new Longitude

PMDG slightly heavier usage than the Longitude

For some reason the Kodiak was rougher on fps but about the same on vram as the Longi

The old Hondajet is a bit rough as well (60 fps is rough haha)

I actually remember doing this test with the 4790K / 1080 ti and I had 15 fps.  The 12700K and 1080 ti gave me about 22 in this moment.  So yeah...a massive improvement (for a cost lol!)  Anyway hope you enjoyed this presentation!

Pretty interesting you got that system to CPU bound. Says a lotta good about the optimizations that have been made to the sim.

Also, nice study of how different models affect performance. It is not always related to aircraft size or system complexity from my experience. There is optimization in the coding and model that can make a huge difference.

Thanks for the detailed report! Looking to build a similar system, but with a 13900K.

Wonder what the difference would be with a 4090, since I am planning for 3 monitors (for the sim surround). The 4090 $1000 more here in Canada....

Most of what is said on the Internet may be the same thing they shovel on the regular basis at the local barn.

Thanks for the post, Ryan. My 4080 arrived at BestBuy yesterday afternoon. Going to be there when they open to pick it up.

Oh excellent!  Is it the FE version?  I think  I could have managed to run a 4090 FE version based on my results from killawatt.... but of course none could be found in stock!

Yes, it is the FE. I am leaving now to go pick it up, about an 80 mile round trip.. I "think" it will fit in my case so have my fingers crossed, it will be close.

Got the new 4080 installed finally. Took me forever to find an extra pci-E cable to plug into my psu. Before I installed the 4080 I put the H-Jet on the end of the runway at Sea-Tac and got between 46-48 fps in a foggy downpoar. This was all Ultra, 200/200 LOD, 2560x1440, using FSR2. I booted into Safe Mode, removed all the AMD drivers with DDU, installed the new 4080, then installed 527.56 drivers. I then went in MSFS and chose DLSS and set up same flight at Sea-Tac. I now am only getting 28-32 fps with the 4080 vs 46-48 with my 6800XT. I know I must be missing somethinng but I sure don't know what it is, although it has been a long time since I played around with "Green"

Did you get it working. Looks like you missed a step as you should be getting way more performance.

I found my issue, or at least Dankovic pointed me to it. I had to enable "Above 4G Support" in my BIOS. It has something to do with "Resizable Bar". I am now getting 98-100 FPS in same scenario. It looks like I can safely send the 6800XT on to Ebay now.

Hey Ryan,

Just curious how you have found the 4080 now you have had it for a few months, would you say it is a good fit for MSFS? I put my EVGA FTW3 3090 up for sale today and have had quite a bit of interest already. I was considering picking up a 4080 for frame generation, I don't have any plans to try VR and will stick with my 55 inch Sony X90K at 4K so the 4090 doesn't seem worth spending considerably more money on.

Would love to hear your experience with the 4080 as you have the same CPU as I do

Since you use 4k I'd absolutely go 4090.  I actually wish I went 4090 for the vram and just overall much faster specs.

I made the jump from a 3090ti to 4090 and never complained about the investment, best ROI I have ever experienced.

Using this threat for a specific reason: I just changed from a 3060TI to a 4080 @1440 keeping the i712700@4.8.

Running still on DX 11 (meaning no DLSS) the FPS rise ist not very impressive. eg KLAX FBW A320 around 35 - 40.or KLAX L1049 30 to 35 on the runway (TLOD 125).

Could someone please comment this and/or sent me his NVCP settings or a few hints? Meanwhile i have try to follow

but the results or not game changing.

Thanks in advance

I suspect you are limited by main tread now? I have the same problem with my I9 10900k after updating from 2080Ti to 4070Ti, no performance gains at all in DX-11 as my cpu now are my bottleneck, I will get a Ryzen 7800X3D next month.

But you can try DX-12, TAA + frame generation, that will give you a big performance boost.

Yes you are right. Limited by CPU main threat. The performance gain is notiable but not as much as i would have expected. May be an i713700 is needed later this year or MSFS will have to be more efficient through updates.
