Restore XP11 installation could it be this simple ?

Featured Replies

I have installed XP11 on a new system. I made a backup of my previous installation. In that backup under custom scenery I have a lot of entries for libraries airports and ortho4xp scenery. Could it be so simple as to copy those entries into my new installation ?

For the most part they should work. The ones you may have watch out for are one requiring some special installation, registration or key that have to be entered but mostly libraries and scenery that were downloaded and copy over should just work fine.

Yes. Or you can copy the whole X-Plane folder to the new PC. Any licensed software will require re-activation.

Maybe I should mention that I have the steam version

Sorry, I don't about that, but your Custom Scenery folder will work on your new PC.

Doesn't matter.

It still does on your hard drive at the end of the day.

This is what I love the most about XP: it's so easy to install, and uninstall 🙂  A Delight for an uninstaller !!!!

If you are using shortcuts for you custom scenery the it's even easier with no large files to have to move.

But for some reason it does not work for me. I don't see the Ortho4x sceneryor any noticable change at all. What could I have missed

Exactly

Here is an example of how I have mine setup

I have 2 TB, M.2 drive with each X Plane 11 and 12 sharing the same drive.

Each one has its own version of xOrganizer managing the scenery files and any of the plugins addon in the event that I have to turn them on or off.

I also have a 8TB mass storage hard drive for my main storage. I have most of the my TE library files park there and using ssd cache setup using a 120 GB ssd for that drive. (as a caveat, I have not fully evaluated the performance yet but I used it in the passed and it works ok for the most part, I am waiting for Orbx TE XP12 updates so I can try them. If the performance is not that great than I'll move them to there 4 TB ssd on its own. But that will come later). The idea  with this method is  to minimize large installation like TE or Orthos parked on the same drive with XP and will boost the performance of the mechanical drive with SSD caching. It not perfect but it suffices. It know it worse without it and if it does not meet my needs, I still will install an 4TB ssd with that option still out there. (In know it's expensive but that's why I doing this way first, lol)  Some of you may have another ssd and that just as good if not better for mass storage that's what I would recommend, mine just happen to be a mechanical drive for mass storage which is slower. (ssd cache that I have is a software solution I found, that replace the Asus Sabertooth X79 that came with the motherboard, the newer motherboard do have that feature naturally since everything has move to solid state drives but still may use machical drives in there system for mass storage and still need the performance.)

So, while I have the mass storage drive available, if I want to install an new version of a particular scenery for XP 12 and I already have that same scenery for 11 and it consume a lot of space,

  • I first remove the shortcut for that scenery in the custom scenery folder in XP12 if its there;
  • Create a X Plane/custom scenery backup folder on the mass storage drive;
  • Move the scenery from X Plane 11 to the mass storage you just create  (X Plane/custom scenery)
  • Create a short of that scenery back into XP11 so that it can still have access to that scenery. and (optional run Organize or X Plane 11 to make sure nothing has changed.)
  • Go ahead and install the new scenery into x plane 12 as normal.

Now you wouldn't need to do all of this if you just want to use XP12 only and just install what's available. But if you're like me, I know everything is not available won't be available for sometime. There are also aircraft to consider that  I may want to still fly those in X Plane 11 because they are not available in XP12 and I want to still have the scenery for them. This is the way to do keeping both sims running and not running out of space in the process.

This works the same way with XP beta's as well.

Sort of an example tip i'm sharing.

First: Did you create the shortcut inside the Custom Scenery folder in X Plane 11 /Custom Scenery folder?  Then move that short cut to the X Plane 12 Custom Scenery.

When you create a shortcut of an particular folder, it carries with it the information in where it was created. Than you move that short cut from (X Plane 11/Custom Scenery)  where it was created to where you want it to appear, in this case is in inside of Xplane 12/Custom Scenery. Then you start X Plane 12 once then shut it down. It should see an entry with a drive letter that will the display where the shortcut points to.

Here an example of what it should look like:

SCENERY_PACK F:\X-Plane 11\Custom Scenery\DD Washington XP Layer2/
SCENERY_PACK F:\X-Plane 11\Custom Scenery\DD Seattle City XP/
SCENERY_PACK F:\X-Plane 11\Custom Scenery\DD Seattle Airports XP/
SCENERY_PACK F:\X-Plane 11\Custom Scenery\DD Seattle Airports XP/
SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Bahia Solano_Colombian Virtual Design/
SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Bahia SolanoMESH_Colombian Virtual Design/
SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Sierrasim-SKPS1-Pasto/
SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Seychelles4XPlane - Airports/
SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Society Islands XP - Leeward - Airports/
SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Aerosoft - EDLP Paderborn-Lippstadt/
SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Aerosoft - LFMN Nice Cote d Azur X/
SCENERY_PACK Custom Scenery/Aerosoft - LPFR Faro/

Notice the files on the DD scenery they resided in the X Plane 11. Those come from the short cuts files.

The others without the file destination are in X Plane 12.

You must create the shortcut of that scenery folder inside the X Plane 11 custom scenery folder or wherever the folder and then you move (drag and drop) that short cut into the Custom Scenery inside XP12 in order for this to work.

It those not appear to the be the case based on your list.

No I do not use shortcuts but copy the whole files. And it is from an old XP11 folder to a new XP11 folder (not XP12)

What do you mean ? I want to use my previous ortho4xp scenery in the new installed XP11 (on new system)

I am just trying to understand what you are trying to do.

Ok so where the previous ortho4xp scenery are located and it maybe in here: Ortho4XP\Orthophotos\ all of the folders... you will need to create shortcuts. Also on the same drive inside the Ortho4XP folder you should have a folder called yOrthos_overlays, create a shortcut of that as well.

create a shortcut of each of those ortho4xp folders and the one overlay folder on that drive and copy or move the shortcuts only into your new install XP11 on the new system.

Those shortcuts must appear inside the XP11 Custom Scenery folder just like all the rest of the folders.

There are usually a lot of othos folders so what I have done is highlighted all the folders then right click and select create shortcut. Them copy or drag and drop the preferred method into your new XP11.
