Wrong way road traffic

Featured Replies

I was sightseeing in a few spots (checking out how SimHeaven looked in Australia and Oceania actually) and idly watching how the road traffic was working and there was something I had not noticed before, all the world is now driving left hand drive vehicles or on the right side of the road! Not sure if they can ever fix this one to have different countries traffic on the correct side of the road (that is right hand drive vehicles on the left hand side etc) Interesting. Ah well.

Basically 77 countries or half the world drive on the left hand side of the road not just one or two. In Asia apart from China everyone else is on the left hand side, most if not all of Oceania (Australia, NZ etc). The UK, and basically anywhere that was a British colony or protectorate or the Brits sold a lot of cars early on, same for Africa, most of the Caribbean area. A couple of South American countries too.

Strange that you never notice this sort of thing until you get decent scenery with good road traffic!

Left a note and this observation with Laminar at their XP12 Forum for Beta Issues. I guess being Americans they never thought about this little fact! Half the world does it differently!

defined in roads.net I believe. do you have custom scenery for aus?

Same for the U.K., wrong side of the road.

Well, Wales seems fine...

Maybe its simheaven?

Could also be that there's a bug here, because that car to the left looks like it is on the wrong side of the road, maybe its not doing it for single lane roads?

Do not think it is SimHeaven,  I removed their Oceania-Australia files due to lots of issues with trees on houses on roads etc all over various regions I looked at in Australia, incongrous buildings (chalet houses in PNG or Wheat Silos in Tonga) Yes I know SimHeaven does their best so I not complaining as such I think the map data SimHeaven may be relying on or using for Oceania is out of whack with what Laminar are using, do not get it in other areas, like Europe.

Same road traffic directional flow issue with or without SimHeaven. Curious I never paid attention to it before until I was checking the layout for a particular region I know well personally! That said road traffic is excellent overall and another one of Laminar's strong points (like trains running on tracks etc).

I am working on converting Pacific and Australian house and building objects I have from FSX/P3D days for SimHeaven to use in the future, it is tedious slow work!

Wales and the UK is same for me all on right hand side of road for directional travel!

Over at the org they said it’s a know issue… and should be fixed. I’m sure in XP11 it was fine.

Over on the org they say everything is a known issue (or not an issue), unless someone also posted an XPD it's not a known issue.

It's definately part of

Reverse – if 1, the car goes in the opposite direction of the road’s natural direction, otherwise it goes with it. Please note that the lateral offset is “from the left” relative to the car direction! So for example in the US (where cars are on the right side), the lateral offset should be greater than 0.5 even if the reverse flag is set to 1.

So if it works in XP11, can probably just bring over the roads.net and roads_EU.net from there.

I wonder if it is specifically "not working" on single lane roads, such that you look at a highway and its working, but then not in the side streets. I've not looked that closely for years.

Thats the problem with XPlane scenery is so nicely detailed that you start to notice this sort of thing I never paid any attention to in other sims because most of the time road traffic never worked anyway (P3D managed to get the Jetson effect - flying cars!). Nice to know - not a show stopper but if you live in a country where you drive on the left hand side - just looks weird!

Speaking of roads - wish there was a way to reduce the broad tar roads they put everywhere to something more in scale and dirt where it is dirt! X-Roads only works for Ortho files alas!

Not having XP11 I guess I lucked out there mSparks - I do have the installer maybe I should install it and rip those files across!

X-Roads is looking for a certain naming convention for folders, for example folders starting with 'zOrtho'.  AutoOrtho starts its folder names with z_ so all you have to do is rename the folders to start 'zOrtho', run xRoads and then change the folder names back to default.  I used this tool for batch renaming folders.

Thanks for the tip will see what I can stuff up!

I just installed simheaven Europe and x-roads and now I have cars on the correct left hand side of The road in the U.K.

Ianrivaldossmith, I reinstalled simheaven Europe version 2.1 into XP12 again and alas not for me it is all the right hand side of the road again! I got a mod from a XPlane user that changed the datarefs for Australia Oceania only and that worked fine in that country, Seemed not too difficult to really but I will live with it for the time being.

Brian thanks for the update - Troopie has now done a sort of world coverage with it, going to give a go see what it does!
