Top tip on this one if ATC delay your descent……”if you can’t go down, slow down”

Wind the speed right back, then when you finally get descent clearance you can crank the speed right back up and the aircraft when in VNAV SPD (Boeing) use pitch to obtain selected speed and so dive at idle power to regain VNAV PTH.

The 1980s technology 747-400 had a very solid and trustworthy VNAV as I believe do the Airbus aircraft, the one on the super hi-tech 787 is utter rubbish in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice!

I have just had a classic case in the sim with the A310 bound for Rome. I'd loaded a SimBrief plan into the sim in order to use ATC which had an initial cruise at FL300 rising to FL360. But I think ATC regarded the first altitude as the cruise level for the whole flight so I had to request an altitude increase of 6000ft which was duly approved.

TOD came. And went. Nothing from ATC. Many minutes went by. Still nothing. I found a different solution to yours because when my nerves could stand it no more I simply switched off ATC!😎

Anyone thinking of buying FSL Concorde when it becomes available might be interested in its vertical navigation. It had no VNAV of course. It had a fixed descent procedure. On a few occasions ATC would request it descend to a lower altitude than previously advised.

Where necessary he crew could engaged idle reverse on the two inboards (the outer two were already at idle) which resulted in a descent rate up to 10,000fpm. Under the normal flight profile 6000-8000fpm was more usual once subsonic.

A very different aircraft in more ways than one.

Step up your game , stop using default ATC.

What alternative would you recommend?

Vatsim is not my cup of tea either.

I think I would actually like to try it someday, that is if I ever decide to take ATC more seriously.  I would like to know if there is any alternatives to default ATC also, that would be interesting if there's any improvements to be had on the default ATC.  I don't think it's ever been improved since FSX.

I use PF3 and have for years, but there are several others. PF3 has a free demo.

There's VATSIM.  VATSIM | The International Online Flying Network | VATSIM

It's live ATC with real people on the radio, many hardcore enthusiast swear by it.  I've never tried it though, that's too much pressure for me 😅

The main problem with Vatsim is the lack of controllers where and when you want to fly. Starting a flight on Unicomm and finishing on Unicomm is not my idea of ATC,

But what if TOD on the FMC is before the instruction from ATC?

If the aircraft is flying a STAR, ATC will typically not give a “descend now” instruction, nor specify an altitude to descend to. Instead the clearance will be to “descend at pilot’s discretion via the XXXXX arrival”. ATC has a good idea (based on your cruise altitude and speed) of where your TOD is going to begin, and they know the altitude and speed constraints of the various STAR waypoints, so there is no need for them to give specific altitude clearances for the descent. The assumption (by ATC) is that arriving aircraft will be using VNAV.

I look for scheduled events on Vatsim, so I know there will be plenty of ATC. I did a flight yesterday from CVG to IAH, because I knew there was a scheduled event from IAH to CYVR that would be kicking off right about the time I arrived. It was great! There were 4 separate Houston Center controllers, approach, departure and tower as well as 2 separate ground controllers. There must have been 30 or more aircraft parked at the terminals waiting to depart when I taxied in.

That is great if you fly where and when  they want you to fly. I fly to different airports every day as part of a VA. Today I will be in Italy, The US, and New Zealand. Probably see in those three areas  right now, about 3 controllers total.

The demo has only about 4 voices for controllers, the paid version has over 100.

I use Pilot2ATC (or P2ATC). It too has a free trial.
