What monitor do you use? 4090 @4k with FG enabled?

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I've got another thread going in the hardware forum but I'm seeking advice here because my new PC build is 100% for MSFS results.

So I've purchased a shiny new PC (currently awaiting delivery), 4090 all the bells and whistles.  I want to run everything at 4k Max settings.
I'm going round in circles looking for a suitable monitor.

After doing some extensive research its clear to run 4k/120hz or higher

  • I need HDMI 2.1 OR DP 1.4 to go above 60 FPS
  • The monitor should be GSYNC enabled NOT "GSYNC compatible" - no idea why though?

The issues I'm having is the cost of a 4k GSYNC monitor at 120hz with HDMI 2.1 compatibility  are incredibly expensive, above £1000 which isn't something my budget stretches too.

I've found this which is in my price point but its only GSYNC "compatible" and guys over at the hardware forum are suggesting this is a bad idea?

ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A HDMI 2.1 Monitor — 28" 4K UHD (3840 x 2160), Fast IPS, 144 Hz, 1 ms GTG, G-Sync compatible, FreeSync™ Premium, DSC, ELMB Sync, Variable Overdrive, DisplayHDR™ 400, DCI-P3 90% : Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

I'm also looking at this one which IS GSYNC enabled but DOESN'T support HDMI 2.1, so assume connecting via Display Port will give desired results?

ASUS ROG Strix XG27UQR 27" 4K 144Hz 1ms IPS Gaming Monitor | Ebuyer.com

For those 4090 owners using Frame Generation @4k can you advise what monitors you are using please?

Thanks

I can't find any which have GSYNC, only FreeSync?

My head is spinning looking at monitors, I'm too far down in the techy weeds none of it probably matters to the average jo.  It seems the best monitor I can find is https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-VG28UQL1A-71-12-cm-DisplayPort-Compatible/dp/B09CDVMNS7?th=1

Its "only" GSYNC Compatible but from my research I don't think this is a deal breaker.  The only 4k monitors at high refresh rate, touted as GSYNC Ultimate are ridiculously priced!

I'm using Asus PG42UQ. It's g-sync compatible and I use it with vsync on in nvidia control panel.

So GSYNC compatible monitors get the thumbs up?

Well. Best choice is gsync ultimate, but as you know it's ridiculously overpriced.

I've really wanted to replace my 43" 4k tv with a gsync ultimate monitor.  But I've found very little gsync ultimate (non ultra wide) in that size.

5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW  and 2  22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU,  360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next

I am running a RTX 4090 with FG on a 55" TV which does "only" 60Hz, no xyz-sync whatsoever and wouldn't know that I am missing anything. have never encountered any visual artefacts like screen tearing etc.

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090,  Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

But your FPS can't go above 60FPS with a 60Hz display, so why enable FG??  This is the bit I'm confused about.

Thomas Derbyshire

I'm fine with only 60hz.  95% of the time frame generation works perfectly smooth for me.  However I notice sometimes it can't keep up and see some quick stutters.  With Gsync ultimate that wouldn't happen

framer generation will help when 60fps can't be maintained.

for situations where I would be getting only less than 60 fps without FG. I don't think I would notice a difference between 60 fps and anything above it.

But my research shows your display can't output HIGHER than 60FPS (using a 60Hz display) with FG enabled, or do I have this wrong?

yes.  60hz max on mine.  But 60hz (If completely smooth) is more than fine for a flight simulator in my opinion.  First person shooters, then I can see the need for higher.

5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW  and 2  22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU,  360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next

"But my research shows your display can't output HIGHER than 60FPS (using a 60Hz display) with FG enabled,"

that's correct. and as my research has shown, "60 fps ought to be enough for any flightsimulator."

Bill Gates or someone else.😊

as far as minimum fps required for smooth video experience, MSFS differs from ego shooters where you have constant sudden abrupt scene changes. that "144 fps minimum" does not apply to flightsimulation. constant frame times @ 60 Hz are totally sufficient.
