Meigs Field visited

Featured Replies

Like many a flight simmer (past a certain age), some of my first memories of “flight” were sitting on the virtual runway at Meigs Field facing north looking at the polygons representing the mighty Chicago skyline. After a good mid-life crisis…I mean, mid-life career change, I am fortunate to I find myself living out childhood dreams of flying people in and out of Chicago’s busy airspace. This week I found myself with one day off between trips that didn’t leave me enough time to commute back home to my family, so I took opportunity to tour my new “home away from home”, including the former sight of Meigs Field. Here are a few shots I took compared to a screenshot I found of Meigs in MSFS (the screenshot is not mine)

Hard to believe that it has been gone for over 20 years now. Sadly the “park” that now occupies the peninsula is largely unused. In the hour plus that I spent there, I ran across 3 cyclists and one park worker looking for trash to pick up.

I'm truly surprised that they haven't torn down the terminal/FBO and the tower!

All the more reason to re-open it.

It was a very sad and authoritative decision when it was made time ago by the city major.

This is unfortunately typical Irish behaviour. We have a history of knocking down beautiful architecture, and replacing it with sterile looking buildings, or nothing at all.
