Hi all. I recently moved my community and official folders onto a 2TB SSD. However, my sim start times from launch to menu is 10-15 minutes with my menu to sim load times being not much better. In total, it can take up to half ann hour from launch to actually being in sim. I currently use MSFS add on linker but I didn’t notice that make much of a difference.

Any advice on what might be causing that?

It could be due to:

1. Conflicting add-on

2. A lot of add-ons in your Community Folder (CF)

3. Too many AI traffic flightplans/models being loaded

As a first measure, and very easy to do, try reducing the number of add-ons in the CF and deselect the AI Traffic to check if there's any improvement

Is it connected to a USB 3 port? USB 2.0 ports will slow it down a lot.

Not sure, how would I check?

you need to actively enrol into the beta program. so if you did not do that... else, my v shows 1.34.16 which is the latest SU13 beta IIRC. If yours shows something lower then you are not in the beta. why am I asking? because the initial load times increased heavily with the SU13 beta, known problem in the official MSFS beta forums. still takes some minutes longer for me these days. so it just could be a coincidence in time if you "recently" moving your data and getting the current SU13 beta....

Not necessarily. Today's motherboard external USB speeds can easily run the sim. Even with a 2.5in SATA SSD

SATA3 is still ~25% faster than USB 3 for most file operations, mainly because USB has a higher latency than the SATA. USB 2.0 is worse because it also has a lower transfer speed than SATA.
But even with optimal storage, MSFS will still be slow to start due to the way it has been programmed and the amount of data that has to be loaded and/or checked.

Yeah, that could be the bottleneck right there. I don't know for sure whether your USB connection type is going to mitigate anything. I looked at adding external drives for the same reason at one time but the transfer speeds - at least for gaming - looked like it wasn't going to be a solution.

An external drive can cause other performance issues; USB devices like to enter power saving modes pretty aggressively. Since it's an external drive, Windows will also default to disabling write caching which will also hurt performance.

I'm in the SU13 beta and load speeds are the fastest they've ever been

Not with an external SSD/NVMe drive connected via USB Gen 3 Gen x2 port and proper USB C cable it isn't. Been there done that. Worked fine with no slow down.
