I think I need to go on an MSFS software diet. But before I do, I'm curious to know if the size of this installation is normal.

A diet?? Before christmas? No don´t do this, don´t punish yourself so hard.

Celebrate the low NVMe prices instead and allow yourself and your computer a treat with at least 2 terabyte!

Appreciate the advice... but, but ...the problem is...

...I've been celebrating the entire year.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

I think preparing for a flight is good practice. Only install into the simulator what will be used for the flight today. After turning off the engine, remove everything that will not be needed tomorrow.

The only real gains you get though is maybe a few seconds quicker load time. It takes longer to disable what you don't want.

I'm using MSFS_Addon_Linker. And yes, it is not really a timesafer because you have to run it first.

But you have a clean community folder and don't have to bother with possible conflicts in case of MSFS updates. Further on, the size for backups is reduced. I backup my MSFS at least after every SU/WU. Not to mention the case of troubleshooting, much more easier to handle with.

MSFS Basic (complete) 300 GB, comm folder 104 MB (navigraph stuff only). 2 TB Speicher.

Kind regards

Detlef

I fully agree that Addon Linker is the way to go -- very convenient, and allows you to select only addons needed for each flight. Even more convenient, you can can set up pre-selected groups of addons to be used as desired for a particular flying session. Why anyone who has more than a handful of addons doesn't use AL is a mystery to me.

I don't understand your statement (in boldface here) that you have to run Addon Linker first. You only need to run it if the program has been shut down, as when you restart Windows; even then, all your previous selections are saved. For me, AL is a great time-saver.

To clarify, my comm folder is empty (except the navigraph stuff as mentioned). Let's assume, today I want to fly the Fenix. Start AL, chose the preset (A320 and some sceneries) and start MSFS. Whenever I want to select another preset I have to shut down MSFS and have to change the preset, or ac and different sceneries in AL, to assure MSFS is running only with the addons I need or want to use for the next flight.

Kind regards

ah I see, 2 or 4 TB is probably not enough anymore after a year long celebration, and bigger NVMe (if these even exist) cost a fortune... But there is still a solution 🙂

Get the storage capacity your computer really deserve! Get 24 terabytes like I did thanks to Western Digital D10 Game Drives, and all your storage capacity needs will be covered for months.

Thanks.

A gazillion dollar question for you: do you backup your 24 terabyte drive??  🙂

I have a 2 TB NVMe system drive and I am tempted to go for 4 TB. But... but.... and this is a big BUT.... the problem with a large system drive is that it takes a lot longer to do an initial drive image or back-up. Subsequent incremental and differential backups are not so bad but periodically testing the backups by actually restoring the system drive takes a long time.

OK, I thought your reference to "running" AL meant that you were doing the set-up (where AL gathers all your information on addons and organizes it), which can take several minutes if you have hundreds of addons as I do. Once you do the set-up, if you keep AL on your taskbar you don't need to do it again unless your computer is shut down or restarted. Using AL to select addon links to place in Community for a particular flying session, which is what you call "running" it, is much quicker, especially using presets (collections of selected addons) and takes mere seconds to do. As I said earlier, to me AL is a huge time-saver.
