Isn't that how the jet stream was discovered? WW2 bomber pilots found they had zero ground speed. Or is it a myth?

There's a video on YT of a Cessna trailing a banner, totally stationary. And videos of STOL competitions where they hover just above the ground.

But then, I have a seagull friend that does this all the time. 😁

It was good but it looked to me he should have a good bit more airspeed and less flap. I could be wrong though.
