My trusty old LG 27" IPS FHD monitor has come to the end of its life and cannot be repaired.

I will now have to buy a new one. Ideally, I would like a QHD 27" monitor (my card is a GTX 1080) but looking at prices, they are roughly twice the price of FHD monitors and frankly I don't want to spend extra money that I don't have.

I have been quite happy with FHD for the last 6 years, so my question is, what would be the best FHD to buy for Prepar3d, at the budget to mid range level? 

Brands readily available are Samsung, LG and Dell.

Edit: I just found this on special. Dell S2721DS 27" WQHD (2560x1440) 75Hz 4ms IPS AMD FreeSync, any good?

I just picked up a 34in Ultra wide and I'm loving it. LG UltraGear QHD 34-Inch Curved Gaming Monitor

Ideally a monitor with a vertical sync down to 30hz would be the ideal, that way you can run a 30hz vsync for a every smooth 30 fps where the vsync controls the frame rate.

For example yy monitor syncs down to 23.976 (it's more a monitor that supports video frame rates - similar to a TV)

I'm not sure if freesync monitors support low framerate compensation to meet the minimum freesync supported rate (48hz typically).

Very helpful. Thanks. The Dell I mentioned shows 48 - 75 hz so would be easy to get one half refresh rate at 30 using Nvidia CP.

I've been using the Dell monitor below for about 5 years without any issues.  I bought it when it was around U$500 way back then, but it has since gone down in price since. I've seen it on sale for U$200+ and pre-owned ones for about the same price at eBay. I like it a lot because it has multiple features not found in other monitors eg. multiple USB hubs on the side and the bottom of the monitor.

In Nvidia Control panel, under Vertical sync, choose "adaptive, half refresh rate".

@IanHarrison, I would urge you to stay with a HD monitor. A 2560*1440 has 78% more pixels so your 1080 will be working far harder to run that many pixels.

I can recommend BenQ monitors if your budget can run to one. Think of a quality monitor as a long term investment. My 32" 4K is 5 years old and still looks brilliant. The build quality is superb.

You don't need a gaming monitor. Mine is for photographers and has a native 30Hz refresh rate. If you search for resolution data for BenQ it shows what refresh rates are available for the resolution.

The SW240 would be ideal for you. 30Hz refresh rate, 1920*1200 and a quality display. Note the 1200, not 1080. Just a few more pixels that won't have any appreciable impact.

1. Use the 3D application setting
2. Off
3. On
4. Fast

Force it through NCP as a custom resolution. Or, since we're in the P3D forum, I guess you use V5 or V6. If so, try setting VRR on in P3D, enabling G-sync in NCP and setting 30 FPS in either NCP or RTSS.

Thank you. I'm using P3D v4.5.  I did as you suggested (see below). Selecting Customization in the Nvidia CP had a warning about possible damage to the monitor but I figured, no guts no glory right?  The worst that could happen is that if it broke, I'd just replace this 5-year-old monitor with the monitor @Ray Proudfoot recommended above.

Pressing "Test" resulted in a black screen, and after a few 'scary seconds' it reverted back to the default 144Hz refresh rate.

I’ve just spotted a problem with my recommendation. The monitor is 1920*1200. If you look at the resolution table that only supports 60Hz, not 30.

That shouldn’t be a show stopper but it will require some manipulation with NCP to achieve 30Hz.

The alternative is to select 1920*1080 which would be fine but leaves a narrow black band top and bottom.

Finally, I’ll move this to the Hardware video subforum as you will get more responses.

This means your monitor doesn't suport 30 Hz at all, sadly. I don't remember how did v4.5 behave with G-Sync, since it doesn't have a VRR option.

Then your card doesn't support it.

Just to advise that I have purchased a new 1440p monitor.

I managed to get a JVC (never knew they made monitors) 27" gaming monitor with DP and HDMI inputs (each one a slightly different maximum refresh rate). A 2022 model, reduced in price to clear. (About US$ 300 roughly converted).

I used HDMI and the monitor set itself up to 2560x 1440 and 60Hz. That of course means that with Nvidia CP half refresh, I can get 30 Hz for my P3D sim.

Brilliant colours and no flickering. And I can actually read the instruments!
