FYI, there is an issue in the latest test build with auto target FPS recalibration upon arrival at new airport getting stuck in an endless loop with FPS priority mode on the ground. Most users don't use FPS priority on the ground, but I am working to improve this mode in line with the recent gradual TLOD adjustment improvements for TLOD Min on Ground/Landing because it seems much better to me and I noticed it today.

I have fixed it in the updated test version I will release later today. In the interim, if it happens to you just uncheck auto target FPS and re-enable it in the air if you like.

I just realised, when you say no Tlod Min I assume you mean TLOD Min on ground/landing is unchecked. This will cause the app to continuously adjust for the best TLOD for your target FPS on the ground and is probably what you are seeing. I suggest you reenable this option and if you want TLOD to change lower than the default 1000 ft, just set a lower Alt TLOD like 100 ft, which is what I do when flying GA.

Yes! this was probably the issue.

Sorry about the late response but weekdays don't give me too much of spare time. At any case, ticking said option indeed resolved the stutter problem. Strange I never came across this before as I am using the utility from day one.

I saw the same thing as well when I had Auto FPS enabled.

FYI, the next test version will see the more graduated TLOD changes I recently made to TLOD Min on Ground/Landing being enabled to also work apply it is disabled. More importantly, I am disabling TLOD changes below 100 ft in any mode as it either causes texture tearing in DX12 or texture flickering in DX11.

I am test flying these new changes with TLOD Min on Ground/Landing being disabled right now and IMO it is significantly better so It think you might like this revised feature when it comes out soon.

So 100 ft will be the lowest possible TLOD Min altitude on expert mode?

I look forward to trying the various combinations of modes!

Still being somewhat curious about the FPS I'm seeing (currently Fenix, FSLTL moderate settings, just passed Dover, TLOD 400 OLOD 200 in MSFS menu). It's a little choppy in the flight deck while panning. TLODs are certainly high enough though. Still in non-expert auto target fps mode (I still haven't touched any other setting the whole day).

Latest log entries:

Just landed at EGKK Gatwick, a very detailed freeware scenery. FSLTL moderate, Fenix, TLOD 400 OLOD 200, full auto mode. FPS is much better on approach - in fact I'm very happy about these values:

Comment:

  • a couple below 60 where FG-induced artifacts could possibly occur, but I have to say I didn't notice any during final approach
  • very sensible TLOD reduction - and it's locked below AGL 1000 - great!

Yes. I think I am doing everyone a favour by not trying to adjust TLOD on the ground with any setting anymore. It was just a jumpy, artifacty, stuttery, and sometime ugly mess.

Update: Changed back to non-expert, non-auto target fps mode. Works much better with the Fenix. Don't need as high TLODs in an airliner anyway. So this is my conclusion so far:

  • Airliners: non-expert, non-auto target fps mode with TLOD 400 OLOD 200 in MSFS menu (I lock FG-FPS at 80 using RTSS in front edge sync - then set AutoFPS target FG-FPS 5-10% lower)
  • GA / scenic flights: non-expert, auto target fps mode with TLOD 600 set in usercfg.opt

I appreciate all the non-expert and auto target FPS testing you have been doing and feeding back the results to me, Along with feedback from others, it really helped shape the improvements I made in this latest test version, and so far it seems to getting a good reception.

I did want to say to you to not feel obliged to keep using these non-expert and auto modes after this is released, particularly given the challenging way you like to configure your settings. I'm sure you already knew that but I just wanted it to be clear there is no expectation on my part whatsoever about what modes users choose to use outside of dedicated testing requests from me. 👍

For my part, I am a true tinkerer, so I love having the options. I truly love and appreciate the flexibility you have given us with this WONDERFUL tool! Thank you and please take your well-deserved rest that you have written about now at least twice!!

It's still not quite done (found another bug this morning that I need to stomp out), but we are getting very close. Thanks to you too for all your comments and input. 👍

No worries, I had a lot of time for testing today. I'm happy that I was able to do both several GA/scenic flights as well as several airliner flights. I feel I've got a decent grip on the the logic behind the different modes, so all in all I think it's been time well spent!

I did discover today that both non-expert modes might serve my purposes well. So I'm happy to continue using them in the near future - until I discover yet another ridiculous, silly, childish mega-exploit of course! 🤪

I made a copy of the logs after each flight, then examined them before they got overwritten. Last flight (Fenix EGKK-EGPH w/ AI traffic) was like I alluded to very successful in non-expert non-ATFPS mode, with a reasonable TLOD of 400. Just looking through the log now:

  • FPS around 80 pretty much from gate to gate (again, RTSS-locked at 80, AutoFPS FG-FPS target 76)
  • FPS on departure 76-94 below AGL 2000ft
  • FPS on final approach 79-80 below AGL 2000ft
  • TLOD 200 below AGL 1000ft
  • TLOD max 664
  • OLOD 200 below AGL 2000ft
  • OLOD min 40 above AGL 10,000ft
  • Clouds ultra or high

These values are absolutely stellar! Thanks again Reset, fantastique 👌

Couldn't agree more! With the current test build, the flexibility is simply outstanding. It should cater for most purposes, I believe.

Well I might have just one more treat for this release, that being to extend TLOD Min extra, which seems to be working very well in non-expert mode, to work in expert settings as an option. I've done up a prototype already, as most of the code was already there, and might put it in to the next test release.

App window would look like below. If you check the + next to TLOD Min, you'll get up to an extra 50 TLOD on the ground and for descent only if performance conditions are very favourable (15%+ over target FPS), with the descent phase self-cancelling should conditions unexpectedly decline. With the + unchecked, TLOD Min will behave exactly as it did before. I am putting this in as I will most definitely use it in expert mode.

Oh, and ignore the average FPS being below target - this is FG trickery at work!

And after that, I promise - no more new features! 😆
