March 5, 20242 yr Ride along with a current day training flight in a B-52 which made it's first flight in 1952, 72 years ago. https://www.militarytimes.com/video/2024/03/04/ride-along-for-a-simulated-bombing-run-in-a-b-52-stratofortress/ One thing in the video disturbed me. Is 1st Lt Hulgren's haircut in compliance with current Air Force grooming standards. In my day if one of my troops showed up to work with a hair looking like that I would have have sent him home and told him not to come back until he got a haircut in compliance with AFR 35-10 (Air Force grooming standards). Have things changed that much? Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
March 5, 20242 yr AFR 35-10?? That went out with the F-4. That would be DAFI 36-2903. These days I'll bet his squadron commander is just happy he isn't sporting a nose ring or rubber girl parts and a bra!! March 5, 20242 yr Administrators High and tight doesn't cut it any more with the exception being the Marine Corps. Back in '70, while on my WestPac cruise, Admiral Zumwalt, Navy CNO came on the loudspeaker about 0600 one morning announcing some new changes. Enlisted can now have civilian clothes aboard ship for use when going on liberty and sideburns could be as long as you wanted as long as they were neatly trimmed! Here's the proof...Pic taken about a week after the announcement, aboard ship in civvies. I actually had hair then! Certainly better than the unionized Dutch army at the time. 😄 Not to mention their 5 liters of beer ration per day. I met a US Army guy who was assigned to a Dutch army bartender unit. His beer ration was somewhat smaller. We had one guy who slicked his hair down on duty, but off duty had the most beautiful head of hair you can imagine. I guess you can get away with anything if your commander doesn't mind. When I first got to my unit and met the First Sergeant, he was wearing his cap indoors. He had no hair whatsoever below the cap. My first thought was, "I hope this isn't the haircut policy!" even though I was bald on top by this time. It turned out he'd had rheumatic fever (I think it was) as a kid and had no hair anywhere on his body. I occasionally got called, Top Junior. ("Top", slang for Top Sergeant) What surprised me the most from the new regs was pregnancy uniforms (hopefully only for women). In the mid 70s in the Army it was a civilian blouse with a nametag. "Um, Chris? Isn't that the standard pregnancy uniform?" "Yup." "Oh. Ok." 3 hours ago, charliearon said: Admiral Zumwalt This guys *eyebrows* couldn't have passed muster. I saw a video of him with his son once, and the son had the same eyebrows. 🙂 They commented on it. Hook Edited March 5, 20242 yr by LHookins Larry Hookins Oh!
