The VR Shutdown Bug Repro Video

Featured Replies

I am the one who posed the question in this week's Q&A about the VR Shutdown Bug.  I also originally reported it on the MSFS Forums 2 years ago.  I have uploaded a video to YouTube showing the issue.  I have emailed this to Jorg along with the full unedited version of the video.  Hopefully it will make it to the development team and maybe they will change their tune now that they have directions on how to reproduce it.  I was really frustrated with the Q&A answer and basically a dismissal of the problem as "low priority" since they could not see it.  However after I spent hours on this today I am willing to cut Martial a little bit of slack.  As it turns out you can't just go in and start up and shut down and expect it to happen because it won't.  You have to do a full flight.  I believe this is because as I have long suspected this is tied to the logbook pop up that was "fixed".  By doing a full flight you trigger a logbook entry so when you shut down the bug appears.  If you don't take off the logbook does not create an entry and you can shut down without the issue.  It would be really great if this works out and they do something about it but at the end of the day I know this is not a priority for them to fix most likely.  It's really my only issue with VR in MSFS so I would love to see it gone.

Just goes to show he(they) don't actually play their own game, if they ever did a full cold & dark start to shutdown in VR they would see this bug very clearly in a wide range of aircraft. Not to mention the obvious displacement and reset of the toolbar windows when it happens.

After all it's a bug they introduced when they added the logbook popup option, so as I shouted at them during the live stream they should fix it regardless of priority, you don't just introduce new bugs and never fix them (and there's far too many examples of this unfortunately).

What I'd also like to know is why the internal testing team, presuming they have one, could also not reproduce this properly!? It's so frustrating at times to see such a lacklustre response and blatant ignorance towards some of the (many) issues with this flight Sim, if they cared as much as they claim they do during the Q&As then they'd realise that with a little bit of TLC they could make it so much better.

Jorg, Seb and especially Martial need to take their rose tinted glasses off, play the Sim like users do and maybe then they'll realise that it's not all pretty, it'll never be perfect no Sim ever will be, but it could be so much better with some overdue care & attention.

Last night I emailed this video along with a link to the full uncut video and explanation to Jorg Neumann.  Based on his history I did expect a response and to my surprise on a Friday evening either at the end of his workday in Seattle or after work he responded to me.  It was less than a couple hours after I sent the email.

In short he told me they had been discussing this issue after the stream and were planning on looking more into this issue.  He is forwarding my email to the team along with the videos.  I had mentioned that the issue was time consuming even for me to find (it’s not a 5 minute process) and that I understood they were very busy.  He said at the end of the day we all want the same thing and that he still uses his Reverb G2 and flies the sim in VR.  It’s easy for me to see that not everyone uses the sim in the same way.  Some people don’t have this bug because they don’t ever completely shut down.  Not everyone is as “hard core” as a lot of us.

I do agree though that someone needs to be doing complete flights in their builds and they would likely catch more issues.  The fps degrading after long flights issues was and example where they could have figured that out before.  I don’t see that issue much anymore but it took a lot of community feedback to get them to find it.

Hopefully this helps.  It’s about all I can do anymore at this point to bring the issue to light.

Great stuff @thetford569, it's great that Jorg responded so quickly and directly but it really shouldn't have to come to this.

Let's see if they fix this for SU16 (can't see it getting into SU15beta to be fair).

Jorg is a very responsive guy.  And he uses vr.  His enthusiasm helps us a lot, but he is not alone in the msfs development team.  If everyone there was like Jorg, the simulator would be much better.  It’s also very good that in our community there are people like Biology, ResetXPDR and such attentive users as Thetford569.  Thank you!

Hopefully they can fix it.  I have wondered all along with this being tied to the logbook has been that there is some code that they wrote at the beginning putting the logbook in and then they changed it to have the option to turn it off.  My fear is that while that code worked in 2D there is some other behavior in VR and that it's alot more work to tackle or maybe they have to undo everything they did.  In that case they may have determined that they don't want to spend time on it and that might be one of the reasons for the response we got.  I hope that it's really because he just couldn't see it but I also wonder if it's a deeper problem.

Thank you so much for doing this. I was going to do same by explanation not video, I am keeping fingers crossed that they do understand what it is we have been complaining about. Lets hope enough of us comment on this so they pay some attention to the issue.

I am hoping that it is at least addressed in the 2024 ver. It would also be great if the settings on the free flight page could be saved.

LOL, the forum mods over at the MSFS Forums removed my message about sending this video directly to Jorg and placed it into a private message that only the moderators can see:

This was their message to me.......

I have turned your post into a private message with moderators.

It is against the forum’s policy to share private employee contact information or to post about that sharing to get bugs logged when there’s been a proper way of doing so that all follow.

Please see this guide on how to report bugs:
https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/welcome-to-the-public-forums/121637

I replied back that I neither shared his contact information nor did I post about that as a way to get bugs logged.  I started that bug report 2 years ago over there and it's been logged and that is where it has sat.  The answered question in the Q&A showed that they did not understand or could not reproduce the issue so I did what was necessary to draw their attention.  I told them I had not violated any policy but whatever....the video is still there for all to see so if they need to hide the fact that I went through other means because their system wasn't working to show what needed to be shown then so be it....

Yeah they have a serious censorship problem over there.

When I want to close the sim I goto main menu first, then choose the enter/exit vr button at bottom of main menu, and then exit to desktop. As long as I exit vr before exiting to desktop it's fine for me.

It's not about exiting the sim, it's about shutting down the aircraft 😉

Oh so sorry...yes I see that now...it HAS gotten old each time we shut down the avionics.
