December 4, 20241 yr Figured I'd turn to the community for suggestions to get the framerates up. I've tried in both 2024 and 2020, and it's a real slideshow even when I drop the resolution to lower than native for the Reverb G2 which I had been using. Activities that were glass-smooth with the G2 are very stuttery with the Pimax, and I suspect it's because I've got something set wrong somewhere. 2024 I can understand because that sim is still glitchy from a framerate perspective, but I'd expected 2020 to be as smooth as with the G2, especially once I dropped some settings. With the G2 in 2020 I had almost everything on high or ultra. I dropped all sliders down one notch for the Crystal Light and punted the resolution down significantly. It's flyable now, but when I turn my head the image is delayed and you see black on the side that's opposite to the direction of the head turn. And framerates are still not 30 -more like 20ish. What settings are you folks running? For reference, my hardware specs are: 7800X3d, 32 gigs ram, 3070Ti, Win10. I know the vid card isn't cutting edge but it's not THAT bad. I'll probably upgrade to a 5x series once they release, and I'll double the ram too, but the hardware I had was enough for a very good experience with the G2. I followed that VR settings video that breaks down all the settings for various headsets, and that didn't do anything for the framerates, so I really do suspect I have something set wrong somewhere that's screwing things up. Any tips? Ryzen 7 7800X3D/B650 X AX | 5090 | 32gig | Win10 | Pimax Crystal Light

I would like to contradict if I may. for VR, especially for the high resolution of the PCL, it is about as bad a GPU as it gets. you can not expect higher resolution, much better scenery and many other enhancements that are now running on the GPU beyond mere graphics, and at the same time keep an outdated GPU. what you can do is use the latest DLSS and choose a setting (quality vs. performance) that you feel is the best compromise for you. until you get your 5090, which will knock your socks off coming from an 8 GB 3070. p.s. and yes, fps are lower in VR in 2024 than in 2020, hopefully they improve on that before you get your 5090. I'll submit my old 1080Ti was probably worse. 😉 To be clear, in 2020 I was getting smooth performance on the G2. I'd figured if I knock the sim resolution down to near the G2's resolution, I'd get similar performance with the Pimax, especially if I also reduced the graphics sliders. I know the resolution is lower because the gauges are blurrier. I never expected to get decent performance with the full resolution of this headset until I upgrade the card, but why is the performance so bad when I drop the resolution? December 4, 20241 yr PCL is clearly limited by my 4090. I'm not sure whether 5090 can release its full potential. To get PCL to run at 60fps with oversampling for the best quality, my bet is that we are four years away until 6090 comes out. 9950X3D / 64GB / RTX5090 / Pimax Crystal Light / Win11

December 4, 20241 yr I'm using a PCL with MSFS2024 and a RTX4090. Frame rates are acceptable for sure. Could be a little better in some busy situations though. Your other specifications are the problem.

December 5, 20241 yr I did some experiments tonight in 2024 and found that to get good fps in PCL, 4090 can only be set to drive around half of the number of native pixels of PCL. At 1x quality in Pimax app, PCL shows a native pixel of 4312x5102 = 22M pixles in 2024 (not sure whether this is for single eye only or both eyes combined?). At this resolution, I can get pretty good fps using DLSS Balanced. If I get it right, DLSS Balanced effectively rendering ~50% of total pixels and then scale up to 100%. So effectively the 4090 is rendering around 10M pixels at these settings. I also tried 0.75x quality in Pimax app, and got good fps with TAA at 100%. Again this is roughly rendering 50% of total pixels, at around 12M. If I set quality higher than 0.75x in Pimax app, fps clearly begins to suffer with TAA. 0.75x quality + TAA feels a bit soft compared to 1x quality + DLSS Balanced. I also tried setting 1.2x quality in Pimax app to see how oversampling could do with PCL. I could run it with DLSS performance but didn't see any noticeable benefits. Whenever I tried to switch to sth higher in TAA or DLSS settings in VR, MSFS2024 would just crash with DXGI error. I think the total number of pixels at 1.2x (44% more = ~30M pixels!) just too much for MSFS 2024 / 4090 to handle. So right now it seems [ 1x quality in Pimax + DLSS Balanced in 2024] is the best combination. In easy sceneries DLSS Quality is acceptable too. The general rule appears that, even with 4090, to get decent fps with PCL you can only render around 10M pixels, then upscale to 100%. The fps I'm getting feels definitely no lower than what I used to get with G2 with highest settings. However, at these setting the image quality in PCL is so much better than G2, very satisfying. Unless Asobo does some magic that vastly increase the VR performance in 2024, I think 5090 is the only solution to get PCL look better. 9950X3D / 64GB / RTX5090 / Pimax Crystal Light / Win11

December 5, 20241 yr I'm pretty happy with the fps and image quality with PCL now (1x quality + DLSS Balanced) in 2024. My TLOD=300, most things on high or ultra, few on medium, same settings as G2. Though I can't say for sure since there is no fps counter in PCL, I believe my fps should be around 40 in 2024, at least on par with the best I got with G2 in 2020. It's quite satisfying that in 2024 with PCL I'm actually getting apparently higher fps than G2, with much better clarity and so much bigger sweetspot. I already retired G2, seeing no reason to go back to it and 2020. VR in 2024 with PCL now is better in everyway than I had with G2/2020, quite a dream. Now, I'm counting on the days when I can finally run PCL with full native resolution at 1.5x oversampling + TAA or DLSS DLAA, to squeeze out every ounce of image clarity out of PCL like I did with G2... I'm expecting RTX 6090 probably can do the job in 2027.. 😝 9950X3D / 64GB / RTX5090 / Pimax Crystal Light / Win11

Flying VR with PCL in 2024 is truly great. Overall performance and image quality in 2024 VR are better than 2020. A few minor issues (toolbar, mouse click, etc) are tolerable, at least for VFR fun. My only major gripe now is that they still haven't fully fixed the classic C172, the one I'm flying most in 2020 for IRL training purpose. Everything now turns on, but there is still no engine sound in the cockpit, very annoying. 9950X3D / 64GB / RTX5090 / Pimax Crystal Light / Win11

Everything now turns on, but there is still no engine sound in the cockpit, very annoying. I'm holding off as it doesn't seem worth it now. With all the issues, keyboard mapping changes, major third party aircraft not supported (BlackSquare, PMDG, etc), and amazing add-ons unavailable (Aircraft Carrier Pro - F/A-18 with weapons for example) it's just not ready in my book. By February/March with a few patches under it's belt it should be good. I'm someone who totally skipped FSX (in all it's incarnation including P3D) and stayed with FS9 because it just worked. We shouldn't be tweaking 2024 after a sim like 2020. The going wisdom with many software developers is release software that functions 'just enough' and fix everything later. Meaning we the customer are unpaid beta testers. Through the course of 2020's maturity everything imaginable broke in Asobo's quest to get a mature code working (including granting our requests). I don't want to go through that again when I have an amazing option already at my fingertips.😏 FS2020 Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR
December 6, 20241 yr Author Well, this was helpful! I followed the vids posted here and also noticed people elsewhere talking about how the CL doesn't like it when more than one flat monitor is running, so I flipped off my other two, and I'm getting nice, smooth framerates in both sims. In fact I'm pretty sure I can bump the graphics up some more when I have more time for tweaking. It is kind of blurry, but I haven't ordered the mid-distance lenses yet and am just using my regular glasses which from what I'm seeing elsewhere probably explains at least some of it. Regardless, it's not as pretty as it could be, but it's definitely useable until the 5-series cards come out. Thanks for all the help, gang!
