VFR (C172) Flight Plan and Autopilot

Featured Replies

I know that this has been discussed all over the place but I am hoping I can get an aggregate opinion on the state of affairs.

So far I am only testing with the C172 G1000 in MSFS2024.

I will admit up front that I am still a very inexperienced user of the flight sim. However, I am a retired computer engineer so my level of understanding of technology is not low.

I have experimented with the online flight planner, as well as via the Simbrief plugin.

More often than not I can get the flightplan loaded and showon the map. However, it is rare that I can get the autpilot to actually follow the plan, even though I turn on autopilot, set my altitude, make sure I am set to GPS mode, and hiot the NAV switch.

I would say that about 4 out of 5 times the autpilot does not take over the flight and the plane just keeps flying in a straight line.

So I guess I am asking who is flying basic VFR flying and using flightplans and autopilot successfully, what is the process you are following that is working?

Thanks ....... Rob

So far with my testing, I have found that if I actually create the flight plan in the EFB then NAV tracking to the flight plan seems to work. But any other process in my case is complete hit and miss with no explanation of why it isn't working when it fails to follow the flightplan.

I have had hit and miss experiences with the WT GNS also... sometimes it will not accept the ENT button at startup... Restarting the sim then fixes it..

That's what I did (as I haven't quite worked out how to import a Simbrief plan yet). I had to do a DIRECT TO to the first waypoint, but it was fine after that.

Add this and see if it helps:

Choose your ascent mode: VS or FLC.

I'm going to make a separate topic on this, but for now I can't get the flightpath to work on the G1000 Cessna 172 in 2024. I create a plan by choosing to and from in the free flight menu, I see the magenta line, but no flighpath rectangles appear on the PFD. Yes I selected pathmarkers in the SCV button.

Have done both. Doesn't help in getting the flightplan followed. Many times I can't even  get the flighplan displayed on the map.
