MSFS2024 just tried to have me land with a 40 knot tailwind.

Featured Replies

The initial mission text stated I should land at runway 30 to a 40 knot headwind, which I did. Once I landed it told me I landed at an undesignated landing area and that I should have landed at the opposite direction, to a 40 knot tailwind. Bear in mind this was a VFR flight to an airfield with no ATC so there was no communication. As far as I know, pilots always land into the wind.

Is there any reason you would do this in real life?

Not a 40 kt tailwind but most airliners have a company policy of 10 or less.  Landing with a tailwind might be required if shooting an approach with lower minimums, or sometimes avoiding a long taxi or back taxi on an active runway.

Additionally aircraft may land with a slight tailwind due to noise abatement procedures.

Yes and have but need to keep your speed up :)

SAR Pilot. Flight Sim'ing since the beginning.

Theoretically you take off with 40kts tailwind, but realistically speaking there is no runway in existence, long enough, to accommodate such long take off roll 🙂
