MSFS 2024 Performance Issues vs msfs2020 on the same system

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get some help troubleshooting performance issues I'm having with MSFS 2024. I recently upgraded to a high-end system, but I'm still experiencing significant stutters and lower-than-expected FPS, especially compared to MSFS 2020, which runs flawlessly.

Here are my system specs:

 * CPU: Intel i7-14700kf

 * GPU: Nvidia RTX 4080 Super

 * RAM: 64GB DDR5

 * Storage: 2TB NVMe SSD (where MSFS 2024 is installed)

 * OS: Windows 11

 * Nvidia Driver Version: 572.42

My MSFS 2024 graphics settings are mostly on Ultra, with DLSS set to Quality. I've also tried experimenting with DLSS Swapper and different DLSS versions, but the results haven't been significantly better. I'm running the latest version of MSFS 2024 (including the beta if applicable).

Here's a breakdown of my performance issues:

 * MSFS 2020: Runs smoothly with Ultra settings, TAA, and Frame Generation at 80-100 FPS in demanding scenery like KJFK with heavy airliners (Fenix, FBW, PMDG).

 * MSFS 2024: Stutters and 40-60 FPS, even with DLSS Quality and Frame Generation. The performance is significantly worse than MSFS 2020, which is surprising given my hardware. Reducing visual quality isn't an acceptable solution for me.

Here's what I've tried so far:

 * Updated to the latest Nvidia drivers (and also tried a clean install using DDU).

 * Installed DLSS Swapper and experimented with different DLSS versions.

 * Adjusted various in-game graphics settings, but the performance difference between 2020 and 2024 remains.

 * Optimized my Windows settings (HAGS, Game Mode).

 * Monitored CPU and GPU temperatures (no overheating).

 * Checked RAM usage (well below the limit).

 * [Mention any other troubleshooting steps you've taken, e.g., traffic settings, multiplayer, rolling cache settings, background processes, overlays, etc.]

I'm at a loss as to why MSFS 2024 is performing so poorly compared to 2020. I'm especially concerned about the stutters, which make the sim very unenjoyable.

Could anyone offer any suggestions or insights? Are there any specific settings I should be looking at? Is it possible there's a compatibility issue with my hardware or drivers? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Yon

I am running similar hardware to yours and do not experience performance problems, as a matter of fact, it runs better than 2020.

Start by reducing you graphics setting to "High" and see how it performs.  Just vanilla, no DLSS, use TAA and fps set to 50% of monitor rate.  This is just a troubleshooting step.

I run on High and find the visuals better than I got in 202.

I am one of those where 2020 runs better than 2024, most of the time. For some reason 2024 starts stuttering hard, sometimes alt+enter helps. Why does it happen beats me. Mind you on on SU1 beta.

Yea this is exactly what I experience, only in msfs2024. It shows okay fps but stutters likes its 15 fps. And this increases overtime during a flight.

changing planes or different sceneries don’t change it.

I’m running a 9800x3d and a 4080 super. 2024 runs great till the 16gb of vram is full. Then a stuttery mess. I have adjusted settings between ultra and high and now rarely run out of vram. I’m thinking in my case, in hindsight, I should have got the 7900 xtx with 24gb of VRAM. Or should’ve just shelled out the money for a 4090. Either way, in my opinion the 16 gb of VRAM with the 4080 is the issue.

I agree it could be a vram issue, most probably it is,  but I observe stuttering mess even with settings on high, same as on ultra.

2024 runs much better than 2020 ever did here. Try DLSS performance rather than quality and you really don't need everything on Ultra, it's just not necessary in 2024. High or even medium for trees, road and sea traffic etc is more than enough.

If your FPS is good but you're still seeing stuttering, it could be an internet speed issue. I'm not sure what to do about this, or even how to confirm it, but people talk about "load stutters" where the sim engine is running fast, but shows micro-pauses when new content is streamed.
