Quest 3 (ASW) - I've run out of ideas and hope has died out.

Featured Replies

I'm pestering everyone on other forums with my problem, so I'll try here too 😉...

I have a new computer (9800x3d; RTX4070TI Super(16GB); 64RAM) and a new Quest 3.
I've been struggling for 2 months without success.
The problem concerns the ASW settings.
When I have ASW on, the image is sharp, the simulation is smooth, but in a clear sky (or water) disgusting flashing artifacts appear.
When I turn ASW off, the simulation is still smooth, but then with every slightest movement of the plane, a disgusting ghosting effect (blurring of the scenery) appears.

I use a cable connection and the bandwidth test is OK (2.6-3.1).
I also tried via Airlink in the Oculus and VirtualDesktop environments - the same problems. I still prefer the cable, because I have a weak internet connection.
I tried without all plugins and with the sliders to the left - no difference.
In 2D mode the simulation is smooth and sharp (e.g. in LFMD I have 160fps).
I rented another Quest 3 - no change.
Dozens of emails with Meta support - blah, blah, blah - no help.

Of course hundreds of tests with ODT, OTT, Ovr plugin, etc...

The strange thing is that there is a group of people who have the same problem as me (both in xp11/12 and MSFS), but there are also people who do not have this problem at all (with similar computer specifications).
Supposedly Q3 does not like RTX 40 series cards..., but then why, many people do not have such problems???

Today I connected my old Rift-S via DisplayPort - and also the same problems with ASW.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions and tips, because I have probably watched all the materials on YT and read hundreds of threads - without success.

The new equipment cost me a lot of money, and now I can only fly in cloudy weather or at night (then I have ASW on and I don't see artifacts).

I apologize for such a long post, but I lost another day of testing today (I installed a new copy of XP11) and I'm ending this day without success... 😐

I just this last week or so got the quest 3 and XP11 working flawlessly (although hand tracking bindings is still a todo, can't seem to get them to click anything)

My setup is

opencomposite vrclient in Resources/dlls/64

WiVRN

a ~$50 Wifi6 router connecting at 576Mbps

absolutely glorious

Having "barely above 12fps" problems with XP12, I've had someone suggest to try replacing opencomposite with xrizer, but not had the opportunity to try that yet.

In that case: Next stop...Nvidia support.

Or a shop for a 5xxx series card. Or a used 3080 or so.

I had an RTX3070Ti (12GB) in my old computer, so I changed it to a 4070Ti Super (16GB). I didn't know about these problems at the time. But still, not everyone experiences this. Yes, I had plans to upgrade to the 50 series in the future..., but it's not known how they work with Q3. For now, I have enough expenses, so the future will show what I'll buy. Maybe another VR equipment. 😉
Meta Support wrote to me in one of the emails that neither X-Plane nor MSFS are available in their store, so they are treated as products that Meta does not provide support for ;-).

I'd say the problem you are having is in ASW rather than the card or Q3.

The Q3 is just playing a video sent to it from the PC, plus I'm pretty sure all you need on windows is steam link.

Most important aspect for good results on the Q3 is network bandwidth, because the video streams are huge, what I expect happened between the 3070 and 4070 is it started sending much higher quality video that your connection cannot keep up with, 100% that will cause

check settings like render resolution, try something other than ASW, wifi6 gives you the best bandwidth aiui.

No, Virtual Desktop.

All SteamLink does (for me on a Pico4 at least) is give you a flat 2D window of your monitor in VR.

windows has the option to stream VR when you connect (just not on Linux)

VR performance in P3d, MSFS 2020 and 2024 is horrible regardless.  For me as well with my Quest3.

FFS, Valve. ALVR can do it and it's open source, so why can't they?

my expletives were somewhat less polite, although, in the context of xplane.

ALVR

As you possibly know, Ive been using monado with the PSVR for xplane 11 and 12, with a bit of source modding I got it "just" usable with both.

after getting the quest 3s tail end of last year, a few weeks ago I finally got round at looking what I needed to do to hook it up to XP.

Monado pointed me to wivrn

https://github.com/WiVRn/WiVRn

That is a fork of monado, but dedicated to the the video encoding/wifi headsets.

out of the box, with opencomposite, its rock solid with XP11, 140% render resolution, full resolution on the headset, max settings in XP11, fixed 36fps in XP, 72hz refresh rate on the headset.

with XP12 i get.....

no more than 9fps at min settings. I believe mostly because XP12 linux is lacking openXR support...

I cant really go back to the low res of the PSVR.

So guess what sim is back as my primary.....

Yep. If you want to do XP12 via Wifi or USB, SteamVR and ALVR is all you have. (To be fair, you can get an image with OpenXR, but the controller handling is broken.)

In XP12, I'm happy with Face tracking at 90 FPS and max settings over VR at 40 FPS at medium settings. I only break out the Pico for games that were actually made for VR now, which are more fun anyway as you can play standing up.

I have amazing performance in XP11 with Quest 2, using Virtual Desktop. Got PrismXR Puppis S1 for 50$ via eBay, exclusively for wireless streaming, and it's GREAT. Mega smooth, pushing 130mbit HEVC 10bit, and 90hz with SSW on (45fps in the sim, 90fps in the headset). With VDXR runtime, XP11 is still calling both Meta Link app and SteamVR, but regardless, I see around 70fps when fps is unlocked, with Vskylabs R44, and other fps friendly stuff. With Toliss it's around 55-60, which is still way above the threshold (45fps). I even flew at native 72fps (72hz mode without SSW) above some more rural areas with no vegetation, and the feel is amazing, just like in Aerofly FS 4.

I know it's not Quest 3, but I think that investing in PrismXR Puppis S1 (it's around 80$ new, I got one for 50$, it's used in YT review only) will solve all your streaming and performance issues. IT's built specifically for streaming VR data. It's not a classic wifi6 router. You connect it to PC via two USB cables (2.0 + 3.0), so it collects all the data directly from your machine and sends it via super stable wifi6 link directly to your headset.  No fiddling like with other routers, and the signal is just for Q2/Q3.

Also, I see performance improvements as much as 20 to 25% when using Virtual Desktop, comparing to link cable. When running XP11 via link cable, using SteamVR, I see around 40fps. With VD, same setup (meta link app + SteamVR) and VDXR runtime (although it shouldn't make difference since XP11 is not OpenXR)  I see at least 50fps (which is around 20-25% improvement mark), and much more stable frame reprojection comparing to ASW. Great two reasons to get PrismXR Puppis S1. Oh, and you also get practicality of use, as you can switch refresh rates and quality modes usually without disconnecting/connecting loop like with link cable. Just disable VR mode, change settings, enable VR mode in XP11. And yes, with VD and Puppis S1, I also covered my switch to Q3, no need for new link cable etc.

Not sure how much Q3 is more hardware demanding, but I suppose it's within 5%. Some say they get better frames with Q3 comparing to Q2, some say the performance is worse. But I think the combination of Q3 much faster decoding and higher resolution will land withing +/- 5% of performance difference.

XP12 is a different beast though. I need to disable all overlay (building + vegetation), to see 50 to 60fps in default aircraft, with same setup using Q2 + VD + VDXR (as XP12 is OpenXR). But I must run it in 90hz mode (with SSW of course), as 72hz (36fps) is too choppy for me, and VD dev confirmed that by suggesting using 90hz  mode because SSW works much better at higher framerate, which is logical. More frames to calculate = less artifacting.

All in all I still stick to XP11, at least until I get 4090 GPU (currently have 3090), or LR fix VR performance a bit, which isn't on their important to-do list.
