Here is my filed simple plan (VOR/LOC only plane):

KWYS.19 DCT DLN DCT MSO DCT KGPI.02 (no transition just final - I expected vectors but didn't need them)

Realistically, you don't file your planned arrival approach. I mean you can, but it will get removed in processing. Your route was also pretty vague for a VOR/LOC only aircraft. If you were anticipating the ILS02, then KWYS DLN MSO V231 SKOTT GOGGS KGPI would have probably worked much better. Who knows, FSHud may have actually worked that route as well?

That being said, getting vectored for the visual is VERY VERY common and technically isn't a VFR procedure but an IFR procedure done in accordance to VMC. It doesn't forgive FSHud in any way for driving you into terra firma, but I would have instantly questioned any decent clearances that were so much lower than those Sector Altitudes on the plate.

That's what charts are for. At the end of the day it's the pilot's responsibility to ensure that he can, indeed, follow ATC instructions or say "unable" and charts are the best recourse a pilot has.

Was safely taking ILS 02 Approach into KGPI (no wind) in IFR and FSHUD vectored me for a Visual 20 instead. Came out of cloud 8000ft straight into mountain. No chance to avoid. FSHUD had told me to descend to 4000!! Will NOT use this app for visual guidance ever again...

This was probably the most shocked I've ever been in a sim. Virtual CFIT on a plate. Relaxed well planned Connie flight from KWYS to KGPI turned into sudden ending. Was descending at gentle 1000fpm landing lights on, passengers be seated when came out of cloud and 100 yards ahead cliff , no chance to pull up (had Sperry on for descent anyway). Cue A2A Accusim screaming from everyone aboard.

There was zero wind at KGPI why take an airliner about to intercept ILS to a visual in opposite direction in first place? Only one other plane in sim and that was on the ground.

I SHOULD have ignored it but what's the POINT of ATC if you pick and choose when to obey it? I l know pilot can override ATC but not in IFR surely?

🤣😅, I'm laughing with you and I know your frustration. Don't feel too bad, I will add a couple of points.

  1. At least in the USA and other places, you, as the pilot, are ultimately responsible for terrain clearance. Yes, once they start giving you vectors, they share the responsibility, but it's ultimately yours.
  2. Some places, like in South America, you are solely responsible for terrain clearance. For example, I had this run where we would go into Honduras regularly from the USA. On arrival, there would be this mountain range that was 8000 to 9000 feet. They would clear you down below it before you were past it. So you had to do the mental math and delay the descent. Once you do the run once or twice, you know exactly when to start down.

I'm just adding this for simming to always be vigilant of terrain and traffic when any of the sim ATC options give you instructions. I see this issue when I do an LA to Vegas run in sim and also when flying into Aspen. Just do a quick check on your routing and know the minimum safe altitudes. In the real world, we brief what's on the approach plate so that we know the minimum safe altitudes around the airport. I remember going into Moscow in the real world and the controller cleared us to an altitude that was 300 below min safe. So we let them know that we would stay at min safe until clear.

I was using FSHUD today for a flight from KLAX to KSEA.  It had me taxi to the holding point for 25R and when I got there it said "Please wait"...  with  spinning icon, not the standard "Hold position" but an actual app hang.

A few minutes later I gave up and closed it.

Yes, I have found it to have VERY limited value, but it has some.

I prefer using Radar Contact.   It's quite robust although if you aren't quick to comply with orders or your stray from your filed plan at all, you will get a good beat-down when you arrive at your destination 😉

I like it best for its ai handling and ground control up to take off and after landing for finding my parking spot. Once in the air it can be a pain. It never tells you off for going off route but will just throw vectors at you instead. I'm not sure if this is realistic but the only time it cares is sid /star /appr. Probably as it's routing is so fussy. I've been manually defining routes for a decade and I KNOW how it works and what I'm doing. 19/20 it won't accept my route without nonsense editing and it's own routes can contain 40 waypoints on a 400 mile flight.

There is so much potential I'm hoping it improves. The tablet interface is vastly superior to on screen and like I said I find it invaluable on the ground especially at night in poor visibility.
