This is for anyone over middle age to prevent eyesight gradually reducing. There is a thing called AREDS formula that contains those things, as well as other antioxidants. It is indeed prescribed for AMD (age related macular degeneration) in an attempt to prevent it from REVERTING from dry form into the wet form that is advancing at a much faster rate. There is no published evidence that I’m aware of, however, that shows any benefit of the areds formula as a prophylaxis agaist developing dry AMD or indeed any benefit in treating milder grade. The original AREDS research was conducted at the beginning of the century. A follow up study (aka areds2) was done 10 years later with an attempt to determine if fish oils provide any additional benefit in that regard. Well, areds2 had failed to show any such benefit from fish oils. Bottom line is, that if one does have anything beyond a mild grade of AMD (that is determined by the presence, size and distribution of particular sediments on the retina) then by all means one should take the AREDS formula (and not just bits and pieces of it) as recommended by the research. Otherwise, one needs to consider the potential costs (not just money wise) of consuming mega doses of antioxidants unnecessarily.
