My 2024 migration questions

Featured Replies

I had asked this in the SU4 thread but wanted to be respectful and didn't want to threadjack so figured I would move these here instead.

It appears with the SU4 Beta that barring some unexpected regression this will be my first "whole-hearted migration" to '24 vs dabbling and then returning to '20.  Even with the same digital twin in 2020 now the one thing I really care about more than anything is that SU4 seems to overcome the mainthread CPU bottleneck and starts to really push the GPU as well whereas in 2020 my 5090 hovers around 50% utilization.

Even if ALL things remained equal that alone would be enough for me to look to migrate.  I have compared it to when P3D went from 32 to 64 bit.  Fundamental shifts...

So with all that said I have a number of questions.  Hopefully the /24 experts can assist.

I saw the advice on A&Oh's migration but is it the same for SPAD?  Just export the profiles and then import back into my '24 version?

ANY chance someone knows about OI4FS for Opencockpit modules?  Same thing?  I mean so many LVars should be the same...

Those are my two largest concerns but I would also LOVE Chaseplane to be available to import camera settings for specific planes as well... 😞  I think this is my one big outstanding want next to the PMDG birds...

What about AIG while I am asking questions LOL, do I just change the path to '24 without having to re-download all the models and flightplans (hopefully)

FSUIPC and WideFS settings should be straightforward, do I need a new FSUIPC license?

I do actually think there was a tool on .to for default control commands as well which would be helpful although I really only have a few default commands left.  I will go look for that.

Trying to think what else outside the obvious of going through all of my add-ons for '24 native installers.  Please chime in with anything I am missing.

ASFS is ready, FSHUD is ready, hopefully Simshaker is ready for my buttkicker.

I can either Dual Boot so I would still have access to my 2020 files but with the benefit of a dedicated OS and true segregation of the two sims or install 2024 on a new drive but same OS.  Any suggestions?

Other than all this I think it's really just exploring the new UI again although I will have to explore streamed vs downloaded as drive space is not a concern.

Please tell me what I'm missing other than my mind, we do not need to review the obvious...

Thanks everyone, as always, constructive feedback is greatly appreciated!

Kinda feel like a lot of this is overkill. Your hardware assignments aside (depending on how complex your setup is, this can be easy or a pain), the software side is simple and doesn't need much planning.

Just install 2024 on the same OS, whichever drive you want. You don't need to have a dedicated OS for the sim.

Then, copy stuff from your Community folder in 2020 to the Community Folder in 2024. Start with your most needed addons, and keep adding them in small batches till you're sure there's nothing causing a crash. You can use Addon Linker so you only have one copy of the files if you like. AIG just needs to be copied/linked in, you don't need to redownload anything.

Any tools that start with exe.xml (FSUIPC, TDS Garmin etc) may need to be reinstalled so that they can edit the exe.xml file for launch. If it's just something in the community folder, you most likely don't need to reinstall it.

2024 largely just works now with most addons, for sure the bigger companies have mostly updated their stuff. Smaller creators, who knows. You'd have to try them out to see.

Appreciate it and yes, overkill maybe but also how I have always done things.  Typically I have an FS OS and a Steam OS for all of the rest of my games/apps.  When using multiple sims I usually keep them segregated.

Interesting on the just copy stuff over comment.  I would have thought that was a recipe for disaster and I would be better off looking for native installers.  I only keep the bare minimum in my community folder anyway so copying and seeing if it crashes isn't ideal but not the end of the world.  I may just prefer to keep everything '24 native.

Good news on AIG, that is a day of downloading and definitely expected the executables to have to be reinstalled.

Still need to find out if OI4FS needs to be re-configured amongst other things, I'm not just moving sims, I'm moving a cockpit from sim to sim with 15+ different pieces of hardware moving with me so it is not as straightforward as some moves may be hopping from one sim to the other.

Appreciate the feedback, thx

Yeah if you like doing things a certain way, the good news is that the sim won’t mind. It doesn’t need all that much attention but certainly won’t hurt. You’ll have a good experience

9800X3d, 4090, 64 GB DDR5 6000 RAM, 4 TB NVME (2x2), 4K Ultra + Framegen

Many planes the same 2020 spad profile works automatically in 24

5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW  and 2  22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU,  360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next

I think you'll find it much more straightforward than you're potentially expecting.

For addons that have a native MSFS2024 installer, I would definitely use those. Some addons are set up differently between the two sims but for others, the only difference between 2020 and 2024 installers is the path of the Community folder.

For AAO, the dev provides separate installers for each sim, to keep things clean and easy.  Can't comment on SPAD.

For the MS Marketplace, all of your addons bought for 2020 - that are compatible with 2024 - will appear in hte sim for you to install.  Those that aren't compatible (eg. the FSS Tecnams) are clearly marked as "incompatible" in your in-sim library.

Yep, Ex Engineer (although they cut off my technicals when I moved to Sales) but I must have a pre-set migration plan with checklists and then a checklist for the checklists...

Most likely but I am SOOOO good at overthinking and overplanning it comes naturally LOL.

Typically I would forego the dedicated OS although my current 2020 sim and the OS image it's on was migrated from one machine to another so it will be nice to start fresh and the bonus is all of my 2020 data is accessible, the sim is untouched and I can copy/paste what I need to and then just format that m.2 or leave like I still have my FS9 and P3D drives (JUST IN CASE) LOL!!!  😉

Thank you!
