November 1, 2025Nov 1 Probably no one cares outside the islands, but our last local airline Hawaiian was bought out by Alaska months ago. This week, the last HAL flight was conducted as Hawaiian was placed under Alaska's operating certificate. All flights now are under Alaska's callsign as ASA/AS. Alaska grabbed the 787s Hawaiian had to expand their service at Seattle. No word on what might replace Hawaiian's 717 fleet used for the inter-island routes as those are long in the tooth.

November 2, 2025Nov 2 Having been through 4 mergers as an airline employee it's never easy. I think it's especially hard for the employees and longtime customers of Hawaiian because there's also a cultural component to the name. It will be interesting to see what Alaska does with the combined airline.
November 2, 2025Nov 2 I remember changing planes at Beijing once feeling totally gloomy and depressed, and looking out the window saw a Hawaiian jet parked at a gate. For some reason seeing their logo really cheered me up. For a moment I thought what? so far away for what seems like such a small local US carrier, but actually JFK and PEK are both about the same distance from HNL.
