Strange Issue in MSFS affecting Performance

Featured Replies

Good morning/good evening everyone

I have made the conscious decision to switch from MSFS 2020 to MSFS 2024 and it’s been great! From the visuals to the performance.. I have noticed that I need to either press ALT+ENTER or open chrome or any app so the sim is not the focus anymore.. the issue presents itself by hemorrhaging frames minute by minute.

for example i get 100fps with frame gen and medium to high settings in Mkstudio’s CYUL and KSEA while just being parked in the PMDG 777  the frames drop incrementally..

100fps then 99fps then 98fps then it keeps doing this until it reaches the mid 70s.. the whole thing unfolds in no less then 2 minutes and to get my performance back I have to press ALT+ENTER or switch to another window.

My system specs

  • GPU: RTX 4080
  • RAM: 64GB DDR6
  • CPU: Intel i9-13900KS
  • Display: 3440 x 1440 ultrawide
  • Driver : 581.94

I have tried cleaning the rolling cache as well as installing a newer or an older driver and still the issue persists.. different airports + aircrafts and still happening

Any solution?

many thanks anyways

Sounds kind of like a memory leak or low vram.

I run the XBOX app to view fps and vram.

nope no memory leaks at all and dev mode off or on is the same and i have like 5gb of vram left in those scenarios

Same thing?

Though the description is a bit different but still same results so in short.. YES!

I have exactly the same issue and it looks to me like framegen is disabling when the focus switches from MSFS to google chrome, littlenavmap, etc.  Not sure if that is the issue, but I have ben unable to resolve over some time and lots of experimental tweaking.

Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia RTX5080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2024 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)

I don’t think frame gen is the culprit.. it’s the Mainthread because it loads up untill your performance tanks i have seen it happen in real time with dev mode you start 100fps and 19ms main thread latency and exactly one minute later your see your fps in mid 70s.. with a mainthread latency of 26ms! While just being parked!

and if you want your frames back switch to another window by using ALT+TAB if have chrome or Spotify open and then comeback to see your old parameters (100fps and 19ms main thread latency) back!? And your performance is normal until one minute pass and then your back to 70fps..

and yes with dev mode off the issue still persists

I'm guessing that maybe the sim is loading additional scenery and buffering offscreen imagery around the acft so that it is immediately available when panning, and taking the sim out of focus forces flushing of the offscreen frame buffer(s).

I never thought I'd see the day where people complained about frame rates in the mid 70s...

It’s not that and it’s an issue since beta and have been reported many times even on reddit and official forums.. the thing is for the lucky few like me i get to lose 30fps and have 70fps but it sure gonna be infuriating when you’re someone else and lose the same and you only have 20fps left

and yes i’m gonna complain because lose 30fps because someone didn’t do their job is absolutely unacceptable for a game like this when my system can achieve 100fps+.

and one last thing bob it’s 2025 not the 2010’s 70fps in any game with a powerful system is not fair

Yes, it's 2025 and 70fps is still plenty to achieve very smooth performance on a 2D 1440p display.
