MSFS 2024 rapid decline in FPS and other abnormalities

Featured Replies

Just doing my first flight with MSFS 2024 - Fenix, EGBBv2, PSXT, AIG - pretty much the same set-up I used with MSFS 2020 for 3 years. TLAA, no FG, Rate Limiter set to 60 in the sim.

All started very well with strong FPS 60 vs 60. I also ran AutoFPS to limit TLOD to 100 on the ground. Then all hell broke loose - FPS started to drop fast down to 20 (I exited sim at this point), GPU load dropped from almost 100% to 45%, and RAM increased to 90%. CPU has been stable at 15-30%.

Any ideas what might went wrong?

Thanks!

RAM at 90% on a 64GB system??  Or did you mean VRAM?

RAM! VRAM is dropping instead as well as GPU load

What you're describing sounds like you ran out of VRAM. This can happen due to a bug, conflicting addons, scenery, or just settings that are too much for your system.

Likely possibilities

1. The settings are too much for your system. 2020 and 2024 are not the same, you may need to experiment and look up guides etc. Your 5070Ti may be running out of VRAM in combination with a bug/addon issue.

2. Some sort of conflicting addon issue - easy to test, start with an empty community folder

3. Some sort of Windows/Driver/BIOS issue - these can be painful to find and sometimes the only way is to blow away windows and start fresh. I would only do this as an absolute last resort though, once you've tried everything else.

One thing you could try to do is find someone with a very similar system (esp. the 5070ti - either here, YouTube, etc) and see if you are getting results that are very different. To me it sounds like you're WAY off what you should see, but I can't say for sure.

I have relatively new system (April 2025 assembly) and I still ran 1440/2k setup. I will be doing exactly the same flight now again and let you know

Again, it’s not VRAM issue or whatsoever. GPU load fell dramatically together with VRAM usage, but RAM usage hit 88%

Hi, please check this tread, maybe could be some answers for you:

Flying the same scenario, the same route now (EGBB-EGPF), no issues, VRAM 74%, RAM - 47, FPS 60/60. I'm afraid that I messed with the sim settings while AutoFPS was on, and that was the reason. I will be doing more tests over the holidays.

I had an issue a little while back with committed memory usage going way high concurrent with XPlane12 slowing way down, even though actual memory in use was well below the 32GB of physical RAM in the system...manually increasing the size of my paging file fixed that (I was letting Windows decide on the paging file size before that).

I'd also look to see if it's repeatable and not some one-time external process (e.g. Windows Update) jacking up your memory usage during the session.

Great, sounds like you got it fixed. With your system it should be very very smooth.

And now you have a baseline for performance so if and when it drops again you’ll know it’s a bug/addon/misconfiguration and not just that the sim itself cannot run well on your system.

Can probably provide more accurate support if you show video overlay of RAM, GPU, CPU, VRAM, GPU power usage, etc. (aka RTSS + Afterburner or other equivalent metric tools/software)?

I have an Nvidia 3060 with 12GB of VRAM and get a consistent 45/55 fps with the FG mod and AutoFPS. Quick note, as an experiment, I also ran AeroTune alongside AutoFPS after 3 flights, my sim seems much more stable:
