MSFS2024: headlamp does not illuminate the interior

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just a quick question: in MSFS2024 not beta, I have noticed that the headlamp (torchlight? flashlight?) does not illuminate anything in the cockpit ?

It does illuminate the ground and external model elements, but anything which is part of the virtual cockpit, may it be the instruments, panels, objets, or the copilot, are not affected by the light. Everything stays dark. Has anybody experienced this problem ? I tried searching but 99% of the returned results are about how to turn the headlight on or off...

Also, can anybody confirm the headlamp is red ? It used to be white in the early MSFS2020 days, then turned red out of nowhere, and I think it had always been red in MSFS2024 ?

There's a headlamp? Is this just a VC thing?

By chance do you have Chaseplane installed?  Chaseplane changes the light and seems to make things a lot harder to see.  You can turn the custom light off in the Chaseplane options and go back to the default.

No i don't have ChasePlane unfortunately 😕

Could there be any other kind of addon that would cause similar trouble ?

Alt + L turns flashlight on/off, can confirm it's white in MSFS 2020/2024, no probs here illuminates area you would expect a flashlight does.

Flashlight works perfectly for me, and it has always been white in both 2020 and 2024.

I think I have seen some add-ons that change the color of the light, you said your flashlight was red, so maybe you do have something installed changing it.

The problem with the red flashlight is that back in MSFS2020, I had deactivated all of my addons (community emptied) and it didn't resolve the issue, flashlight was still red.

In MSFS2024 the deactivation of addons (including the steamed ones) is even worse, so I'm not really looking forward to deactivate them all.

However I'm 100% certain that I have never installed any mod related to flashlight. I know there's a mod to make the flashlight specifically red, but I have not installed it in my sims (MSFS or MSFS2024). So I'm really curious...

And again, the color is just a part of the problem. I can live with a red flashlight, it's ok. The real problem is that this flashlight refuses to illuminate anything in the cockpit. It illuminates everything else, but not the inside of the plane. This is just incomprehensible...

Thanks, but as I have written above, I have never installed any flashlight mod in MSFS or MSFS2024 🙂

Bumping this thread because I could finally identify the origin of the problem.

TL;DR: it's the GAS Super Stearman that replaces the MSFS/MSFS2024 default white headlamp by a red one, and that red one is incompatible with MSFS2024.

Yesterday I got too much annoyed by this bug, so I restarted the investigations. I ended up renaming my Community folder to "exCommunity" and created a new, empty "Community" folder, in order to disable all of my addons at once. I didn't want to do that in the past because MSFS2024 takes a long time to start on my computer, and I was way too lazy to try the "add some addons, restart, see if the bug is back, etc..." technique.

After restarting I noticed the headlamp was white and fully functional again, so I understood I have no choice but to go with the "add some back, restart" method... and it took a while, I restarted almost 10 times the sim, but finally I could find the culprit: it was the GAS Super Stearman that was bringing this red headlamp. And since it's an MSFS2020 addon, it seems the headlamp effect is not compatible anymore with MSFS2024. So that's how I ended with a headlamp that didn't illuminate anything inside the cockpit, and only worked on the ground and the outside elements of the aircraft such as wings, wheels, engine cover etc...

I inspected the sub-folders of the GAS Super Stearman and found a fx_flashlight.fx file in the Effects folder. I thought this file was "re-defining" the headlamp for all planes, and that deleting that file would solve the issue... but I was wrong. After deleting that effect file, the headlamp didn't work at all anymore in MSFS2024 for all planes 😞 So I ended up deleting the Super Stearman entirely, which solved the issue.

Note that I also have the GAS Stearman (not Super) but I haven't installed it, so I don't know if that model creates the same issue.
