  1. Thnaks for that advice.I am finding this Tileproxy to be very intriguing - even when using the lower resolution FS9. I think that this is what will be pointing me towards finally purchasing FSx - I have held off until now - and of, course, I would really then need to also upgrade my RAM to 2 Gig. I am finding that even with FS9, my 1 Gig RAM (which is normally sufficient) is being maxed out.I am finding that the more I fly in a particular area - the less problem I have with the black squares. I have used both Service 2 and Service 3. I started out using Service 3 as per Truthans recommendation - but then changed to Service 2 - but have now gone back.Tonight I have been flying around the Isle of Wight. It is obvious to me (also after looking at the Yahoo Maps website) that only the eastern side of the Isle of Wight has been photographed in high resolution. Flying round and round the island - which is about 10 miles by 20 miles, I could see high resolution tiles( at least the highest that FS9 can display) across the whole eastern side of the island (only) . But when flying into the lower resolution western side of the island the high res textures on the eastern side started to go away - and be replaced by either low res textures or black squares. At 2500 feet, you can easily see 10 miles away - is there any setting to prevent the high res textures from disappearing after they have previously appeared? You can see in this screenshot that some of the textures in the eastern half of the island have reverted back to a lower res. Thanks for any further adviceBarry
  2. Hmmm - I am wondering whay I cannot get a response to this post. Is this something that only I am experiencing? Thanks Barry
  3. Hmmm - no comments from anybody so far regarding this - one way or the other @-@ But anyway, I am starting to have some success. It seems that sometimes on initial bootup at an airport, all of the relevant texture tiles are not loaded. It appears to be a bit hit and miss - and I am suspecting the ability of the map provider to send the textures at a particular point in time. However, a number of attempts seems to load all the necessary tiles and I can then fly. Really, all it means is that you have to fly in one area for a while to make the downloads worthwhile.Barry
  4. Hi I have just installed Tileproxy Beta 7 in FS9 - and found that on initial bootup, I was getting randomly placed black tiles including at my startup airport of Archerfield Australia. I did this a couple of times with the same resulthttp://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k59/Barr.../Tileproxy1.jpgI tried again after a short break (without touching any settings) and it worked great -no black tiles.http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k59/Barryward12345/TP3.jpghttp://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k59/Barryward12345/TP2.jpgI then shut the system down and tried again - and returned to black tiles again. This is all starting at the same airport and same FS time.Anybody else noticed this inconsistency in results.?I must say that considering that FS9 only uses 5 metre resolution - it is still quite exciting. Now to only solve this inconsistency problem.Barry
  5. Great tutorial PDF I followed it to the letter - everything seems to do as it is supposed to do --EXCEPT that I am getting some (not all) black tiles. See here http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k59/Barr.../Tileproxy1.jpgFPS are high - the Sim flies smoothly - just black tiles.I have a fast ADSL Internet connection - have checked that I only have one texture source selected ( the Yahoo one which is the default selecton in the INI file)Any ideas of things to do with it - I have yet to search through the forum so will see where I get. BTW - this is in FS9Thanks Barry
  6. HiCould somebody please explain to me the difference between 2 view settings --one in the panel .CFG file VIEW_FORWARD_EYE=x, y, z and one in the aircraft.cfg fileEYEPOINT = x, y, z I have always used the first of these to set my eyepoint in the VC.Thanks for any adviceBarry
  7. >>but, how do you know which SID / STAR to use.>>for example, a flight from EGLL to EHAM just shows a BPK dep,>>so how do you know which BPK SID to use, as there are quite a>>few.>The SID is tied to the departure runway.>For example (in this case):>BPK4K is for 09L>BPK5J is for 09R>BPK6G is for 27L>BPK6F is for 27RBut how do you know which runway you will be allocated until the very last moment before departure? It will be determined by weather.Barry
  8. The SP1 download site has this condition for downloading and installing SP1"Notice: Third-party content requires VS 2005 SP1 to successfully load. Third-party content developed for FSX using VS 2005 SP1 requires the new VS 2005 SP1 redistributable file"Could somebody kindly translate that into English for me - and do I need it. I am running WindowsXP-SP2I hate installing things that I don't know what they are. Thanks for any helpBarry
  9. >I fly a Pilatus PC-12 and a King Air 200 from Hesperia,>California. How do I get FS9 to have a memory about where>they are parked?>Can I get FS9 to have a memory about ALL aircraft? If I leave>something in a particular airport will it be there until I>move it?G'day JoeSure you can . Simply fly your Pilatus from your homebase to wherever - then after you have parked it at the destination, simply SAVE the situation with (say) the name PILATUS. Do the same for the King Air (only , of course, use a different name for that saved situation.) Then when you want to continue the flights in whichever a/c, you simply open the saved file.Barry
  10. Hi allI have not as yet purchased a copy of FSx - still using FS9. However I have recently built a new machine which I think should be OK to run FSx. I am aware that SP1 and SP2 can be downloaded from somewhere(MS site?)-- but am wondering whether a retail version of the programme with SP1 and SP2 incorporated into it is available. If not, what would a person who is not connected to the Internet do?Any help much appreciated. Thanks Barry
  11. Hi GuysI am just about to go on a 10 day South pacific cruise :D :D :D - but I want to leave you with something to chew over while I am away ;DSomething I read triggered me to look deeply into the settings of my freeware AVG anti-virus scanner. I am on Broadband and have my computer running all the time - so , when I fly the Sim (either online or standalone), I am not partial to turning off my AV programme - mainly because I am fearfull of forgetting to turn it on again.I don't have any particular issues with my Sim - it runs well except for some occasional pauses when it appears to be doing something with the harddrive (loading textures??) But I have found a setting in the AV programme where you can nominate which files it should scan - this is selectable to "all files" or merely "infectable files". The "infectable files" section is also able to have certain file types included or excluded. The default for this includes BMP files. Now, as we know, the Sim uses a lot of BMP files - so it looks like the AV programme may be scanning these before using them in the Sim. I can't really detect(via the Windows Task Manager) any great activity by the AV programme - but my question is, would it be OK to delete the requirement for the AVG to scan these BMP files. I can't say that I have ever heard of BMP files being infected by viruses. Thanks for any help Barry
  12. I have just been playing around with MEMSTATUS. It shows what System RAM and Video RAM is being used by the computer at a given time.I noted that, while flying a complex addon a/c, about 80% of my system RAM was being used - but only a small amount of Video RAM (about 20%) was being used.It also showed that my available video RAM was actually more than I have installed on the vid card - but that my usage of system RAM as reported by MEMSTATUS was more that that being reported by the WindowsXP Task Manager.Has anybody got any comments to make regarding all this. It appears to me that an amount of system RAM is being allocated for use as Video RAM - when it is not really needed because of the low amount of Vid RAM actually being used. But does it matter anyway?? I don't have any problems with the sim - runs nicely except for some micro-stutters when it appears to be searching/obtaining something from the Harddrive.Barry
  13. I am curious as to why MS has produced this acceleration pack. It obviously adds some things that are not in the original FSx - but essentially, as far as I can see, it is "just" another addon. Perhaps it is just a revenue raiser (OK by me - that's why they are in business) - or is there some other motive?Any thoughts please??Barry
  14. >i'm able to specify the affinity if i want toWhat does this mean?Barry
  15. Hi NEALOC187>one thing to be aware of, MANY reviews stated that the people>who purchased the board had to reinstall windows, which often>means that you'd lose your FS installation. However I>PERSONALLY did not have to reinstall windows when I got>mine... my previous windows install worked perfectly and still>is. i seem to be in the minority in that respect though.I suspect that you may have a problem that you are not even aware of - ie your computer may actually be running only one core. I had the same situation as you - I built this new dual core machine and expected that I would have to reinstall WindowsXP and everything else. However it booted up into Windows quite nicely from my old harddrive - and I thought , like you, that I was saved from having to reinstall. However I discovered that one core was not running. Go into your TASK MANAGER (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and see if you have TWO "CPU USAGE HISTORY" windows showing. Also go into your Control Panel/Device Manager and see if it shows an an "ACPI Multiprocessor" in the COMPUTER section and also shows TWO Intel Cores under PROCESSORS. If you do not have all these things, then WindowsXP (your old installation on your harddrive)is not recognising your second core and you will have to reinstall!!Regards Barry
  16. Hi TVBrilliant!! I can see now (I think) how to create an XML file for (say) IL2, or CFS3 , Lockon, BOB -- I have all of these Combat Fsims - but they are too difficult to remember all the keystrokes required.I read somewhere that the way it has been done for FS2004 with FSUIPC feeding back the various FSim states is a better solution - but it will be interesting to see how the simple generic solution works.EDIT - Excellent! I have just created my first XML interface to IL2 Sturmovik. At this stage , all it does is start and stop engines to my verbal command!:-) But it is a start and I can see how it works. This is a really good discovery for IL2 - because, unlike FS2004 that has a fully clickable VC, IL2 is mostly controlled by keystrokesThanks for all the helpBarry
  17. Hi TVYes please- I have sent you my email address by PM.I notice that Dominique's profile works for the unregistered version of FSUIPC. I have a registered copy as well - and everything seems to work well.Although a profile for FS2004 shows up in a separate folder in the download - alongside others for FS2002, BAO, Fly!, etc - SB 2.2 must somehow automatically open it and use it, as I have never used the "OPEN PROFILE" menu item. There is also a "Generic" profile folder included in the download. I have opened the .DWS and .XML files , and , although I am no programmer, recognise their structure. I don't know if I would be capable of creating a new profile to interface with another game programme though. Thanks for the help- please look in your PMs for my email address. I am about to go in a couple of days on a short weeklong cruise to Noumea, new Caledonia and other South Pacific places - so will look forward to your further assistance when I get back. :-)I have done a comprehensive search on the net of anything to do with Speechbuddy - not much info to be found really. It seems to have been largely ignored. Shame really - because it does work very well and has a great deal of potential.Barry
  18. Hi AvcomwareThanks for thatVersion 2.2 of ths programme comes with an interface for FS2004 by Dominique Andlauer. I have been playing around with it all day today - and it appears to work very well "straight out of the box"So far, I have been able to replace use of the keyboard completely in FS2004. It is so much more enjoyable to either use the mouse to click VC switches or to use voice to alter other things like views and xoom levels, etc.Are you aware of any interfaces available for other Sims - eg any of the Combat Sims. I find that remembering their complicated keystroke sequences is a PITA. It would be a lot easier to use voice for this. Barry
  19. How did your upgrade form 1 gig DDr 400 to 2 gig DDR2 667 go??This website http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2810 seems to say that there is a not a lot of "real-world" difference between the 2 types of RAM Barry
  20. I have downloaded Speechbuddy from Avsim, installed it and I have done some "Speech recognition training".I have started up the default C172 - and the programme seems to work OK. So far , I have been able to tell my co-pilot to lower and raise the flaps.:-) But I am finding that the "readme" file is difficult to follow/understand and am unclear as whether you are supposed to have some kind of INI file for each aircraft type.In general, what I am looking for is some better information/instructions on how to use this programme. It looks like it has great potential.Any assistance much appreciatedThanks Barry
  21. >Thanks Barry,>>Never heard of the ASROCK MB before, so this intrests me as it>may reduce my costs considerably. But which MB model? You seem>to indicate it supports both AGP & PCIe which would be great>since I have AGP video. Does this mean it has both types of>slots on the board?>>JimHi JimASROCK are apparently well known for making "unusual" MOBOS. I used this one http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=4CoreDual-VSTA It supports the 1066Mhz FSB model Core 2 Duos.It has both AGP 8x and PCIe slots, DDR and DDR2RAM slots and both IDE /SATA connections. It is aimed squarely at those who want to upgrade to the faster Dual/Quad core CPUs - but who wish to use their older AGP, DDR and IDE devices. Although the Intel 6600 only 0perates a little faster than the AMDxp2400 (2.4 meghz compared to 2 megahz) - it is a MUCH more powerful processor and leaves the old AMD cpu standing at the corner!!Barry
  22. I managed to do a very inexpensive upgrade - with a considerable increase in performance.Over the past 3 years, I had already upgraded my Vid card, power supply, 1 gig RAM and a second 7200RPM IDE harddriveBUT - my vid card was an AGP card, and my 1 gig RAM was DDR300 RAM. So I used an ASROCK motherboard which takes either PCIE Vid cards or AGPx8 cards, DDR or DDR2 RAM , and either SATA or IDE drives. The new MOBO also gave me AGP x8 and USB2 - an improvement over the USB1.1 and AGO x4 which I previously had.All in all, the upgrade only cost me $375 Australian dollars - and I am more than pleased with the result. I used a Core 2 Duo 6600 CPU.Barry
  23. I'm running XP. I will probably run Vista in 3 years time- after I have built a new machine then. In the meantime, my new Core 2 duo WindowsXp based machine has all the overhead I need to do most everything I want. This thread is not meant to bash FSx at all - in fact, from what I have seen of it, I like it and the sim "out of the box" is , in my opinion, far superior to FS9. I am really looking forward to using it in 3 years. :-)Barry
  24. 3 years ago or so, I built an AMDXp2400 to run FS2004. I had previously been running FS2002 on a P3-1000 - and it was a bit of a struggle. When I tried out FS2002 on the new Xp2400, I noticed how well it ran compared to what I had been used to over the previous couple of years - but I was keen to get into FS2004. Having struggled now for the past 3 years with the Xp2400 running FS2004, I have now built a Core2 duo 6600. NOW - I can run FS2004 like it was always meant to be run.I am now convinced that it is better to be a late adaptor than an early one. I am now looking forward to building a new machine again in 3 years time - whatever specs it may have then, I don't know. But I do know that it will run FSx brilliantly - along with all the great addons that will be developed over that time. Barry
  25. G'day BillYes - it needs quite a lot of room to land/takeoff - not a STOL a/c by any means. It is very easy to find yourself too high and too fast on approach. I asked about the real life figures - bcause i am sure we do things in the Sim that we would not do in RL!! :-)Barry
