  2. The reason I ask is that I have "flashing clouds" - which so far only seem to happen within the Missions. have not noticed them outside of the Missions so far. But in the Missions, the weather menu is greyed out.Any help much appreciatedThanks Barry

  4. Hi AristaInteresting point about the server situation - something that I will have to be alert to.MY INI file is the latest from ED Truthan . Unfortunately it doesn't have any suggested level remapping for Service 2 - so I can't see what you are saying.But I am a bit confused abut this remapping. I can understand what it is - ie replacing lower res textures with higher res ones- but I think it also involves "stretching" out higher res textures so that they go further out from the current position of the a/c?My difficulty(s) in undersanding are:1. I note that Service 1 has levels 9-17 while Services 2,3 &4 have levels 5-17. Why is this? - and what is the effect of it.2. If the max LOD of the INI is 15 (representing 1 metre res), why do the above go to 17 3. Ed published some screenshots of flying in the Florida Keys - using Service 1 and level remapping 9,10,11,12,15,16,16,16,17 But the max_lod of the INI is set to 15. It seems to me that my understanding that these are somehow related/equivalent is incorrect.4. In the TP User manual, under the section titled "Understanding the Level of Detail (LOD rings) and pre-loading" - there is a table that shows Res per pixel for the different LODs and also "Tile length" per LOD. Is "Tile length" the square size of a particular LOD. I note that the table only shows info for LODs 8-17 , but the example above for Service number 1 has levels 9-17, but the MAX_LOD is set to 15.5. Are LOD's the same thing as the remapping levels for each ServiceA bit confusing for me - but if I could just figure it out, I could work out the best level remapping for my unique set of circumstances here ( ie my machine capabilities and my ISP/internet connection capabilities crossed with any particular Service providor capabilities.Thanks for any helpBarry

From the TP manual:"You might want to compare the quality that you get from the different map services - either online in your web browser before flight - or from within FSX (save your flight, exit TileProxy,switch the service in the INI file, cleanup the "TileProxy Photoreal World" folder with the corresponding "Cleanup World Folder" menu item, restart TileProxy and reload the flight). "I missed the bit "cleanup the "TileProxy Photoreal World" folder with the corresponding "Cleanup World Folder" menu item". I merely swapped over from one provider to the other.Anybody care to explain what this is all about - I am a bit confused about the "Cleanup World folder and also the "Manage Service caches" (where you can delete particualr areas form particular Services.I think I will now delete everything via the "Cleanup World folder" and also via "Manage Service caches" - and see what I get in the Florida Keys.( see my previous post re disappointing screenshots) Barry
  6. :( :-lol Thanks EdActually, I thought that perhaps you were flying lower than me - that shot was taken around 2500' - but I had been up to 3500'Right now my ISP is not co-operating. Everybody is complaining about them - file downloads are fast but HTML/web browsing is slow. I think this will be affecting my TP accessing the different services as well. But today they are supposed to be increasing their bandwidth. My shots were taken on the fly. Funny thing though - if I look at the TP DOS box, I can see that one or 2 of them are not "complete" - so I hit PAUSE and wait for them to fill in -- but I can't actually see anything happening onscreen. I would have expected to see something going on onscreen as the boxes fill in??Anyway - it is all good fun and well worth doing. It is easy enough to either fly with TP - or not. I fly the Missions in "normal" FSx - they are a bit of fun too. Even with my "disappointing" shots - it is still great to see the Florida Keys overhead as they are in real life - well, close to it anyway. I find FSx used this way is a great geography teacher. My wife and I have travelled a lot - (going to England in 3 weeks time for 7 weeks) and I find this TP fascinating from a travellers point of view.Barry

  8. Louis I know that you and others are only trying to help- but I don't know how many times I have to say this. I used/use the programme called MEMSTATUS - this gives dynamic readings of your system RAM and Video RAM - how much you have available (taking into account even the amount of system RAM allocated to video via the system BIOS AGP setting), how much you are using right now and what the peak usage was.When I had SP2 installed, I adjusted my scenery settings such that the amount of video ram being used was only 180Mb ( I have a 256 MB card) - and the problem remained. I had the problem regardless of how much vid RAM I was using. Would you consider 180 MB usage from a 256 card to be "video exhaustion"??NOW - with SP2 removed - I can run FSx with ram usage figures around 300 MB ( total physical vid RAM plus some from system RAM) -- and I don't get the artifacts. Now , if I did in this case - I would accept the fact that the card has "video exhaustion" Now, whether I have "fixed" THE problem or not -- I have fixed MY problem. Stopped hitting my head against the wall - because it hurts - and the doctor told me to stop. Undoubtedly it would hurt again if I recommenced that action.Maybe SP2 doesn't like my brand of MOBO, VID CARD, system RAM - or perhaps the brand of red wine I am drinking at the time. I don't know.   9. Having setup AA and AF in ATI Traytools, I can see how to turn off AA in the Sim, but what about AF?? Should I set, Bi, Tri or Aniso in the Sim?Thanks for any helpBarry

There is only one question in my mind regarding FSx - and therefore regarding the future of the Sim franchise itself.That is - while understanding that people who frequent this forum and others like it have the opportunity to get advice but still have difficulties after availing themselves of that opportunity, I wonder just how many people (thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands?) purchased the original FSx on release, found that it simply didn't work for them on their 1 gig CPU machine with 32 meg vid RAM (as advertised on the back of the box) and which also didn't work for their friend who had a system twice as powerful as theirs with a 2 gig CPU and 64 meg vid RAM. I guess they probably would have thrown it in the back of the cupboard and said "I'll never get one of those again - and I'll let all my friends know what a POS it was." They probably, not being a frequenter of these forums, have never even heard of SP1 and SP2 - much less are able or wiling to carry out the highly tech requirements needed to get it all working ( what!- I have to buy a fancy defrag programme - something called O & O?? just to install this thing?? :-) )I am not "knocking" the programme or the franchise or the programmers involved - just a bit amazed really and wondering what the impact of it will be for the future of Simming?   11. I have today installed TP into my new, fresh FSx installation. Over the past week, I have been "tuning" FSx and have read a lot about so-called"tweaks" for FSx. It appears that most of these were in fact developed before SP1 was issued and it seems that some are no longer of any use. In fact they may even be detrimental. It also seems that your success or otherwise in running FSx is dependent on a number of things - which some of these tweaks interract with in a negative way . 2 of these "things" relate whether you have a dual core or single core machine - and also to what amount of vid RAM you have.I note that installation of TP makes some changes to the FSx.cfg file1. TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULTI is changed for 40 to 4002. FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION goes from default 0.33 to 1.33 (with a note in the installation folder to say that if this is too sever, then go back to0.66)3. BUFFERPOOLS goes from default 4 MB to 5MB From Phil Taylors' ( MS) blog is this info relating to each of these:===============================================================TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULTIThe TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT option in the Graphics section is the target frame rate use for calculating texture bandwidth. AS the original poster - I am not too sure which subsequent posts are for me or at aimed at others.Where I am with all this now - is that MY PROBLEM IS FIXED! :-) Cleaning the card was a really good idea - because it badly needed it -- but didn't fix the problem Installing the latest ATI drivers was perhaps a good idea - but didn't fix the problem.Installing and using a programme called MEMSTATUS was a really good idea because it has taught me to see just what the effect of the scenery sliders are on video RAM usage. It also taught me that I could use lower scenery settings (such as a lower LEVEL_OF_DETAIL_RADIUS)which uses less video RAM but with no discernable differences onscreen -- but it didn't fix the problem.Uninstalling SP2 was a REALLY, REALLY good idea - because it did fix the problemSo, I now know that my completely standard FSx installation is running really nicely for the type of flying I do (mostly bush and regional)stuff - and I don't have to buy a 512 MB vid card.That is not to say that sometime in the future, if I start to use complex addons, etc , I may have to purchase further equipment.Barry

  20. Hmm - so does this mean that, once having setup TP and the INI file to the point where it is all working, we should be either subsequently changing the Map versions(as they change) for different servers or download/install each new version of TP.RegardsBarry

Hi Mitch What do you mean "reapplied SP1" - are you saying that you installed SP1 again after uninstalling SP2?I am a bit mystified by the fact that I do not appear to have any facility to uninstall SP1 (not that I want to) - but only have FSx in the add/remove programmes section of Control Panel.   22. GRAPHICS PROBLEM FIXED!! :-jumpy Removed SP2 and all is now OK:-cool BUT - the only entry I now have in my add/remove programmes list in Control Panel is for FSx -- no mention of SP1 at all. Is there some way that I can see within the Sim itself that SP1 is actually installed?? :-hmmm EDIT - never mind. I have found that the fix to "Lisbon Harbour" (as explained in FSInsider.com) is showing in my sim - so SP1 must be applied.It looks like I am now a happy camperBarry

I am wondering whether I should uninstall SP2 - I asked in another thread what was in SP2 and whether it was worth installing, but the answers I received were a bit ambiguous. I do really suspect SP2 to be my problem - as no amount of changing of scenery settings (right back to the very lowest settings) helps this problem. At the lowest settings MAMSTATUS is showing that my vid card RAM is nowhere near maxed out - but the problem remains.Abother starnge thing is that I have SP2 showing in my Control Panel/Add Remove programmes page as a separate programme able to be uninstalled - BUT there is no uninstallation item for either FSx itself or FSx SP1.Barry
  24. At the end of the day, it probably does come down to the video card. It is very strange - because changing settings seems to do nothing . In the areas that I am flying - mostly bush areas - I am getting smooth flight and FPS rock solid at 20 - regardless of what settings I have or what the vid card Ram usage reading in MEMSTATUS is.BUT - I have a consistent problem with these spikes in Mission number 4 - always there, and always a result of changing view direction -- even though, after changing over from ATI traytools control of AA and AF made me think that I had it solved (while in free flight) I'm not too sure about the V-sync thing - I always though that was for when you had very high FPS (above the framerate of your monitor) Barry
  25. Hi Mike I have not used any "tweaks" at all. In fact, I don't appear to have a "bufferpools" section in my cfg. Are you saying that SP2 introduces a heavier vid load?In my posting above, I have said that I am indeed close to the max for this card - not that it appears to be affecting things such as sim smoothness or FPS.Something strange going on here.Barry
